St. Louis -TOTO- The busiest
man on the San Francisco Gi

named Bowman - not Ernie
the shortstop but trainer
Frank Bowman.
Two more names were
added to the growing injury
list Friday night as the Giants
lost 13-0 to St. Louis and fell
four full games behind the
Los Angeles Dodgers.
The first casualty was
pitcher Jim Duffalo who
stopped a sharp drive with
his pitching hand in the sec

from the game and is expect
ed to be out of action for two
weeks. Six stitches were nec
essary to repair the back of
his right hand.
Then in the ninth inning
Jimmy Hart was struck on
the back of the head and was
carried from the field on a
stretcher. X-rays later showed
no serious damage and he was
expected to be back in action
within a few days.

Yank Doubles Team
Upsets Mexican Due
By ERIC RIEL
Los Angeles - (UPI) - The
United States doubles team
of Dennis Ralston and Chuck
McKinley swept to an upset
victory Saturday in straight
sets by scores of 6-1, 6-3, 8-6
over Rafael Osuna and An
tonio Palafox of Mexico to
take a lead of 2-1 in the Davis
Cup tennis North American
playoffs.
The doubles victory gave
the United States the upper
hand in the series for the
first time.. The Yanks ran
into stiff opposition from the
Mexicans in the third set, but
they continued to dominate
the game against the favored
Latin American twosome, rec
ognized as the best in the
world.
The only service break in
the deciding 37-minute third
set came in the 13th game off
Osuna's service. Osuna had
performed brilliantly but
continued errors by Palafox
deprived him of the support
he needed.
It was the first time Mc
Kinley and Ralston had de
feated the Mexican pair in
three Davis Cup encounters.
The Mexicans won the dou
bles in five sets in Mexico
City last year, and in four
sets at Cleveland in 1961.

Pizarro Victim
Of Yank Power
By MILTON RICHMAN
UPI Spoils Writer
Some dugout philosopher
once said the Yankees break
your leg first, then they am
putate it.
They do the job with such
thoroughness and dispatch
that it usually doesn't hurt a
bit. One-two-three and it's all
over.
That's exactly the way they
carved up poor Juan Pizarro
and the White Sox Friday
night in a 4-2 victory that bal
looned their American league
lead to a rather ridiculous
looking nine games.
Pizarro had a 2-0 lead go
ing into the ninth inning and
all he needed for his 15th vic
tory was three more outs.
That's when the Yankees
went to work on him.
Three Homers
Tom Tresh, Hector Lopez
and Ciete Boyer hit homers
within a 10 - minute span
and bang,' bang, bang - just
like that - it was all over.
Tresh opened the . ninth
with his 20th homer and, aft
er Elston Howard walked and
Jack Reed ran for him, Lopez-
slugged bis 13th homer Into
the left field stands to put
the Yanks in front for the
first time.
The shell - shocked Pizarro
then yielded Boyer's 12th
homer of the season to suffer
his seventh defeat compared
with 14 victories.

Little Luis Rodriguez came

More Acreage

Of Waterfowl
Portland - Waterfowl gun
ners who hie themselves to
the Summer lake public shoot
ing grounds in Lake county
each year will find more acre
age this fall on which to en
joy their sport of duck and
goose shooting.
Phil Schneider, state game
director, announced that the
game commission recently
completed acquisition of 2,546
acres of marsh, potholes,
greasewood scablands and
some lands under cultivation
for Inclusion in the Summer
lake game management area
Four Wells
Formerly known as the
Williams Artesian ranch,
Schneider said, the area lies
adjacent to the north boun
dary of the management area
extending northward to Ana
reservoir, The property lies
within the boundaries of the
original Summer Lake game
management project as it was
drafted back in 1944.
Four artesian wells are on
the property, and around 500
acres are under irrigation
from the Summer Lake Irri
gation district. It has the po
tential of around 600 to 900
acres to be developed into
croplands for upland game
bird and waterfowl use.
Schneider said there is also
the possibility of developing
a series of ponds and potholes
for waterfowl. Much of the
area has a high potential for
upland game bird usage.
The commission also recent
ly purchased a small tract of
26 acres of land from David
O'Connor, a rancher in t h e

Destroy the Woods And
Prepare for . . . Progress?
The woodland consisted of
about 12 acres. Unfortunately,
however, for its own sake, it
was too favorably located; a
railroad on one side, a high
way on another. Some enter
prising individual, noting the
location of the property and
the nearby road and railroad,
fell over himself In purchas
ing it. The owner, not una
ware of the value, jacked up
the price, but the other was
determined, for he could see
great things ahead. The deal
was made and the property
changed hands.
The new owner could hard
ly wait to get started. He was
already thinking of the profit
to be made. He began to de
velop the property. Equally
gleeful were the bulldozer op
erators who moved in their
equipment. Day after day the
roaring motors and slashing
blades hacked and tore at the
trees, leveling them and clam
bering over their prostrate
forms.
The animal life that called
the woodland home, scamper
ed ahead of the destroyers.
They were no more important
than the trees. A family of
flying squirrels occupied
hollow at the top of a tall
tree. The little flying squir
rel mother decided to remain
with her babies, offering her
puny protection.
Their home tree fell with
deafening crash, then the

unfeeling machine, its tracks
clattering, crushed the tree
trunk like an egg shell. Pro
gress was moving across the
woodland.
Each night the heaps of
brush and tree trunks were
ignited and the flames as
senseless as human contempt,
licked viciously the body of
the little forest. Room enough
had been cleared alongside
the road to erect a sign,
which read:
Available soon, this choice
location. Footage on highway
and rail siding."
Stumps Resisted
Last and most difficult of
accomplishment was the re
moval of the large stumps.
Some only released their grip
on the earth under the com
bined power of two or thret
nuge tractors. Some were
blown apart by explosives; a
few had to be dug out by
hand and machine.
Great heaps of stumps, sat
urated wltn fuel oil, were
ignited. The acrid smoke
blanketed the neighborhood,
made driving hazardous on
the highway and irritated the
throats of those folks living
in the path of the prevaling
winds.
Earth graders, roaring and
panting, filled in the low
spots and smoothed out the
slight elevations. The winds
came and blew away the leaf
mould and the top soil. The
sand blew into the roadway
and sifted into nearby homes.
The woodland was gone, the
ground was level and the area
was a little desert.
All this destruction took
place nearly 10 years ago. The
silly sign advertising the
'golden opportunity" long
lince has been broken and
faded and now is but a dis
organized pile of boards.
But a new sign has been
put up. In view of the destruc-
tion caused by the bulldozer
and the land leveling ma
chines, and the untidiness of
the now vacant, weed-grown
lot, a low point in human
culture and stupidity h a
been reached, The sign reads:
"Anyone defacing t h 1
property will be prosecuted to
the fullest extent of the law."
