Butts Attorneys
Sharpen Up for
Final Arguments
By LEON DANIEL
Atlanta-OIPD - Attorneys in
Wallace Butt's $10 million
libel suit against the Satur
d a y Evening Post sharpened
their final arguments for the
curtain ringer next week to
one of college football's sharp
est controversies.
The trial was in recess this
week end following two
weeks of testimony and argu
ments in federal court. The
12-man jury is expected to
get the case late Monday after
final summations are conclud
ed and -Federal Judge Lewis
R. Morgan instructs them.
Butts, the round little man
who once led powerful foot
ball teams from the Univer
sity of Georgia to Southeastern
conference championships and
into the nation's bowl games,
was pictured alternately Fri
day of a lover of night life
and a man ruined by a slan
derous story.
The Post claimed in an is

while atheltic director at
Georgia,' gave away football
secrets to Alabama coach
Paul (Bear) Bryant prior to
last fall's Alabama-Georgia
football game.
Both heatedly denied the
allegations and both sued for
$10 million.
Bryant's suit is still pend
ing in the federal court in
Birmingham where Post at
torneys are trying to get it

Shouts To Jury
In the opening of final ar
guments in the Butts suit Fri
day, Butts' attorney shouted
to the jury that the career
of the former coach and ath
letic director was "ruined"
and Butts was "heart broken
and a shell of his former
self."
"March 18 was the blackest
day to Wallace Butts that
could ever befall any man,"
the attorney, Allen Locker
man said.
"That was the day the ar
ticle h i t the newsstands. On
that day Wallace Butts be
came ashamed, heartbroken,
just a shell of himself."
Post attorney W e 1 b o r n
Cody contended that Butts
"snapped" because of too
much night life and had
plunged to the point where
his best friends said he had
"lost his character,"
Cody said Butts was asked
to resign as coach after 22
years because of his person
al conduct but permitted to
remain at the school as ath
letic director.
"This same night life" led
to Butts' forced resignation
as athletic director, Cody
said.
Tells Of Notes
Speaking of the notes At
lanta insuranceman George
Burnett testified he made in
overhearing a telephone con
versation between Butts and
Bryant nine days before Ala
bama walloped Georgia 35-0,
Cody said: "These notes were
made by an amateur, not a
football coach.
"A lot of them don't make
any sense. But there is a
lot in these notes."
Cody emphasized a nota
tion Burnett made on the final
page of the notes: "Give Wal
ly a ring Sunday."
