The pastor spoke of Steph
en as a man, whose problem
was "too bold preaching.'
who, when stoned to death in
a moment of extremity, pray
ed to God to "forgive them."
The prayer contained nothing
about himself.
"Stephen was full of grace.'
said Dr. Johnston. "Grace is
that thing inside you given
by God that warns you of
temptation. You know what
you should do and you do it.'
He added that "Stephen prac
ticed what he prayed about."
The prayer of an athlete
is "not let me win the game,'
said the former footballer.
He described Christian
athletes as men who realize
"God Is Coach."
Dr. Johnston said that ath
letics speak to men in a lan
guage men can understand.
There is a peculiar kind of
fellowship in athletics, the
minister pointed out. The
FCA, he reported, begins on
the premise that athletes have
a great gift to share and that
this gift comes from God
The spirit of athletics is trans
lated into their Christian life
"You can spot this kind of
vitality, he said.
He spoke of Samson and
Stephen to "correct the pic-
t u r e of an athlete, particu
larly a Christian athlete." -
Led on the Field
Discussing why a coach
should be associated with a
Christian movement, Murray
said that boys on his football
squad initiated his interest,
He noted that the boys inter
ested in FCA and other Chris
tian activities "were those
who led us on the field."
The coach stated that the
analogy between a successful
Christian program and a suc
cessful church program is
much the same. He reported
that on the football field the
spiritual qualities that make
success can be assessed
Colbin, who has been active
in the FCA four years, said
the first thing that comes to
mind in FCA is Christianity.
"This has been the biggest
thing; yet, they tie in fellow
ship." He said, "I can't be
alone any more ... I crave
this fellowship."
Colbin brought out that the
athletic part does not come
first. When an athlete gradu
ates, the blood and sweat is
left on the field. Nothing is
taken with the athlete except
the things' he's learned.
Demarest, former Univer
sity of California baseball
pitcher, introduces the three
who spoke. He preached here
last Sunday.
The luncheon meeting was
at First Presbyterian church.
