The Medical
OP
Contact Lenses
Many people, and even
some physicians keep asking
if contact lenses can safely be
used, or if
there are any
serious objec
tions to them.
Actually, I am
much impress
ed by the fact
that often,
now a d a y s,
when I meet
an attract 1 v e
woman, to my
surprise, I find that she is
wearing contact lenses.
Such women tell me thai
they won't wear anything
else. One ot them just said,
If I can t wear contact lenses
I won't wear any glasses."
Occasionally this woman has
to take a lens out for a few
minutes when she has some
dust in an eye. Also, at times,
If she suddenly looks to one
side, the lens will flip out and
she has to catch it and put it
back in. But these difficulties
of course are minor and are
to be disregarded.
It usually takes about I
weeks for a person to gel ac
customed to the lenses. At
first they are foreign bodies
which, naturally, produce
many tears. As one would ex
pect, there are some hyper
sensitive persons who just
can't or won't go through the
period of adjustment.
A near-sighted person gels
such a thrill when for the
first time, standing at some
distance from a mirror, she
can see herself clearly as she
nevqr did before. Without
glasses she saw only a blur
red image of herself and the
world.
Don't Easily Adjust
I can imagine why some
people just won't or can't
wear contact lenses because
they do not easily adjust to
new and uncomfortable
things. I'll never forget seeing
highly sensitive, nervous
woman put on her first pair
of bifocal glasses. In 30 sec
onds she had them off saying,
Throw them away; I won't
wear them." She just would
not make any effort to get
used to them.
To show that the big thing
is to make an effort to adjust
- I might say that I, who am
more than normally sensitive
to most stimuli, in 1832 was
able to pul on bifocal glasses
and walk right out of the op-
tician s office. While I had a
little trouble with double
vision on stairs, I soon got
used to it, and that is the
way people must behave with
contact lenses. They must be

Graham Attracts
40,000 To Crusade
Los Angeles -IUPII- Nearly
40,000 persons turned out
Thursday night for the open
ing of evangelist Billy Gra
ham's 25-day crusade here. He
pinpointed this city as a po
tential leader of a "great
spiritual awakening in the
United States.
Graham told the crowd that
the entire human race has a
sword of Damocles hanging
by a hair over its head.
"Sooner or later," he said,
"a crisis far worse than Cuba
will put us all to sterner tests
than Americans have ever en
dured. "The racial crisis in Amer
ica is getting worse. Our debts
are getting bigger. In foreign
affairs, we are facing the awe
some and growing power of
Communist China."
