Cooksey, and a former Med-
ford school girl, will repre
sent Arizona tomorrow in the
12th annual International
Beauty Congress in Long
Beach. Calif., according to
press releases from Southern
California.
The 18-year-old brunette is
sponsored by the Nancy Tay
lor Modeling School and Dur
ham Business college in the
event under auspicies of the
International Beauty Con
greas. There will be entries
from 49 states and 48 coun
tries. Miss Cooksey is an execu
tive secretary for the Midwest
Group Insurance company in
Phoenix, Ariz. While at the
contest she will wear western
clothes, a pink silk brocade
vest over a white western
blouse and pink bellbottom
riders with white boots and a
white western hat. Her ward
robe also includes two formal
gowns and a swim suit.
Contestants will be Judged
on beauty of face and figure
and poise. Carol, who has
studied modeling for about a
year, has never modeled pro
fessionally. The contest finals
Will be national televised
over NBC-TV Friday, Aug. 16.

the firm's total sales for the
first six months of 1963
amounted to about $560 mil
lion compared to $584.4 mil
lion in the same period of
1962.
Earnings amounted to $32.4
million in the first half of
1963 and $31.7 million in the
first half of 1962.
The firm reported the new
pulp and paper mill at Gardi
ner, Ore., was making rapid
progress and that it was ex
pected to start on schedule
during the first quarter of
1964.
The board of directors de-
clareed quarterly dividends of
$1 per share on the common
stock, payable Sept. 16 to
holders of record Aug. 28.

against Negroes exists on a
"very quiet basis" in Oregon
and even at the University of
Oregon.
The statement was made
by Dr. Wesley G. Nicholsen,
pastor of the First Congrega
tional Church in Eugene, be
fore the Senate Employment
and Manpower subcommittee.

U. S. A. Dance Caravan, a
series of summer dance
courses, in Portland, Ore.
Teachers from New York
and Hollywood taught many
versions of ballet, tap, jazz
and ballroom dancing. Mrs.
See was accompanied on the
trip by Mrs. Gino Baldo of
Weed.
Mrs. See conducts evening
dance classes during the fall,
winter, and spring months.
Portland Woman
Enters Innocent Plea
Portland (UPD Mrs. Irene
Brown, SS, Portland, pleaded
innocent in Circuit Court
Tuesday to a charge of sec
ond degree murder.
Mrs. Brown is charged
with the fatal shooting of her
husband, Henry Brown, 53,
a Portland policeman, at
their home this year.
The clergyman and Dr.
Kenneth Polk, assistant pro
fessor of sociology at the uni
versity, appeared before the
committee to urge extension
of a law under which com
munities receive federal
grants to help plan youth
employment programs.
The topic of racial discri
mination was brought out
when Subcommittee Chair
man Joseph S. Slark (D-Pa.)
asked whether the juvenile
delinquency rate was higher
among minority groups.
Dr. Nicholsen, who said
there was no difference in the
delinquency rate in Lane coun
ty, suggested that discrimina
tion was found throughout the
country, Clark had expressed
surprise that it should exist in
Oregon.
Dr. Nicholsen said a "tense
situation" exists in Portland
and elsewhere in the state. He

At Oregon State
Corvallis-ttJN-A new $2.4
million library and 373-bed
dormitory will be ready for
opening of fall term at Oregon
State University, the school
said today.
The new library will have
1,600 study stations compar
ed with 600 in the present li
brary. The older building will
be converted into a classroom
and office building once the
books are moved to the new
structure.
The new residence hall is
the seventh built in the past
seven years at OSU.

The little dog was brought
from Washington to Otis

President as a surprise gift

wife and their two children.
The dog was given to the
President at Shannon during
his recent visit to Ireland.
The reason for its temporary
name was that there already
are seven other Kennedy
dogs.

40, Corvallis, Ore., died Tues
day night on U.S. Highway
101 south of here when he
was run over by his own ve
hicle. The Highway Patrol said
Nelson was coming off a high
hill when his brakes failed.
He scraped the side of the
road for several hundred
yards in a futile attempt to
slow down. Then he attempted
to leap to safety and was
crushed by the dual tires of
his own truck.
