Automats Replace Cafeterias
Kansas City. Mo. - (UH;
The coin-in-the-slot food ma.
chine already has replaced
w the soiip ladle and the steam
' table in hundreds of college
cazeterias.
Now it is moving Into high
schools - impelled by the al
most universal problems of
loo many pupils and too little
of everything else, particular-
, ly money and space.
Officials of the unified
school system at Glendora,
Calif., recently installed 28
vending machines in a high
school snack bar. The move
permitted them to shut down
two cafeterias. They prompt
ly turned the space into class
rooms. Dr. Del Walker, superin
: dent, who expects his school
population to triple in the
next decade, said the trans
formation saved the school
system 25 to 30 hours of labor
daily in the snackbar, where
. nine serving windows former
ly were operated during rush
hours.
Reduced Cost
Albert S. Prentice, business
services manager for the
Glendora schools, said the
system is "serving more chil
dren, at a reduced cost, while
keeping our labor and space
at a minimum.
Holland, Mich., does it dif
ferently. There, superintendent Wal
ter Scott, known nationally
for his espousement of prog
ress in education, built a new
high school complex in which
food is served exclusively
from vending machines.
Scott estimated the initial
cost saving at $102,000 - $50,
000 on kitchen equipment he
did not have to buy; $57,000
in construction costs for space
to house a kitchen.
Catering Company
Holland vending machines
are supplied through an out
side catering company, and
the supplier also keeps the
machines in repair.
In the Washington, D.C.
area, LaReine Senior High
school built a new plant in
I960, with a kitchen and
dining room of its own - but
does not use the kitchen.
Sister Mary Gerald, princi
pal and supervisor of the high
school, said the food service
has become a profit-making
venture for the school, instead
of an expense and a liability
from the standpoint of per
sonnel and administra t i v e
problems.
At LaReine, as in other
school installations, a wide
variety of hot and cold foods
is offered at reasonable prices.
The menu includes hamburg
ers, 20 cents; fish, 30 cents;
hot dogs, 15 cents; soup, 15
cents; and a casserole of tuna
and noodles, 30 cents.
From LaReine, the vending
machine operation spread to
several other parochial high
schools and to at least one
public high school in the area.
Glendora officials said at
least four nearby school sys
tems have made a thorough
study of the Glendora oper
ations and plan to duplicate
it.
A spokesman for a vending
machine manufacturer said
inquiries from school admin
istrators indicated a surge of
change-overs was in the
making.
Cost savings in new school
construction apparently is the
biggest single motivation.
Some studies indicate savings
in initial construction costs
run as much as $100 per student.
Britt Festival Opening Is Called 'Most Satisfactory'
By DR. HERBERT CECIL
Head of Music Department
Southern Oregon College
Sunday afternoon saw the
opening of the first Peter
Britt Gardens Music and Arts
Festival with a concert by the
Festival orchestra under the
direction of John Trudeau.
As in all things new, there
were a few "bugs" to be
worked out (something will
have to be done about keep
ing the bright sunlight out
of the eyes of the violin sec
tion), but the overall level
of achievement was most sat
isfactory. Before the official opening
of the concert and before the
conductor ascended the podi
um, a "Fanfare for Brass"
was played. The program in
formed us that this selection
especially for this occasion
by Ernie Hood, formerly of
Medford and now of Portland,
who was present for the open
ing. The fanfare was followed by
the introduction of Mr. Tru
deau who proceeded imme
diately into the program by
presenting his trumpet solo
ist, James Smith, in a per
formance of Ernest Bloch's
Proclamation for Trumnpt
and Orchestra." This selection
was undoubtedly chosen to
open the festival because Er
nest Bloch, who was one of
the 20th century's leading
composers, spent the last
years of his life in Oregon.
As the title would suggest,
the "Proclamation" is some
what in the manner of a fan
fare and employs the solo
trumpet in fanfare style. Mr.
Smith is a superb performer
and he executed the solo part
in a brilliant manner. Bloch
employed a certain amount
of dissonance in his harmon
ic structure, as do most 20th
century composers, but he
never overpowers the listener
with it and "Proclamation" is
no exception. We though it
was well-done and an excel
lent start for the festival.

listens to this music Is: Why
did Mozart not use a solo
flute along with the other
solo parts? Every musical
logic seems to demand it,
but art does not always pro
gress in logical ways. Maybe
Mozart just did not have ac
cess to a good flutist. The so
loists Sunday were Peter
Christ, oboe; David Atkins,
clarinet; Gordon Solie, bas
soon; and Russell White,
French horn. They all played
beautifully.
Apparently the solo chairs
in the Festival orchestra are
all occupied by very capable
performers.
The high point of Sunday's
concert was reached for this
reviewer in the performance
following the intermission of
Peter Mcnnin's "Fantasia For
Strings." Mennin is an out
standing American composer
of the present time who has
written a large amount of mu
sic for various media and is
only recently being recogniz
ed for his really prodigious
talent.
The "Fantasia" is in two
parts, "Canzona" and "Toc
cata;" the first movement, as
its title would suggest, is in
song style in a polyphonic
texture suggestive of the 16th
and 17th centuries. "Toccata"
is a term which originally
mcnt "touch - piece" and was
used for very rapid, brilliant
works by composers of the
18th centurv incliiriliii; the
great Bach. Menin's use fol
lows this precedent and his
"Toccata" is brilliant. The
strings of the Festival orches
tra performed it very well
indeed.
Concluding Selection
The program was conclud
ed with a suite of selections
from Handel's "Water Music"
as arranged by Harty. There
are five movements in this
suite and they follow the out
lines of the Baroque dance
suite with such titles as Al
legro, Air, Bouree, Horn-Pipe,
Andante, and Allegro Deciso.
The suite was performed in
very good style.
We would like to congrat
ulate Mr. Trudeau for a most
auspicious opening for this
first Festival. There are im
perfections, of course, in ad
dition to the sunlight in the
violinists' eyes. The acoustics
will be improved when a roof
is built over the pavilion:
the ensemble playing will im
prove when the orchestra has
played together just a little
bit more; perhaps some pro-
gram notes would improve
the understanding of the au
dience of some of the less
familiar works. These are
minor points and they are
more than balanced by the
better things that were evi
denced.
This reviewer likes the fact
that we are hearing some con
temporary music. There is a
lot of fine music that has been
composed in the century and
