Club Toga
Eddie Simmons, veteran
golfer of Rogue Valley Coun
try club, turned in a fine com
petitive round at the Medford
links on Saturday to annex
the men's club championship
for the fifth time.
He defeated Justin Smith
7 and 5 for the crown.
It was the first club title
in 10 years for the past Ore
gon and Southern Oregon
champ.
Simmons, who led Smith 2
up after Wednesday's 18 hole
portion of the match, was
three under par Saturday in
closing out the contest on the
3l8t hole of a scheduled 36.
Smith played even par over
the first nine holes of Satur
day's action, including an out-
of-bounds shot on No. 7 which
was regarded as the turning
point in the tussle.
Birdies Too Late
Each of the adversaries had
five birds for 18 holes on Sat
urday. But three of Smith's
were too late. They came aft
er the club title tilt was offi
cially completed and the two
were just playing out the re
maining holes of a full round.
Simmons, who swatted
some wonderful iron shots,
birdied No. 1, 3, 9 and 13
holes in Saturday's part of
the match. He took a bird on
200-yard No. 9 by barely miss
ing a hole in one then closed
out with two strokes on the
tough par 3 No. 13 which is
191 yards.
Smith lagged by four holes
after five greens on Saturday.
He threatened to get back into
contention on No. 6. The long
distance hitting Smith drove
almost to the green on the
par 4 hole and came up with
a bird to reduce his deficit
to 3 up.
It was figured that Smith
would be able to use his long
blasting ability to pull up
some more on No. 7. But, the
ball out-of-bounds wrecked
that chance. And, this was
ironic because Smith won on
No. 8, another long distance
hole.
Another out-of-bounds blow
by Smith made the match
dormie on Saturday's No. 12
(6 up for Simmons with six
to go).

. . It's Not an Intrusion!
People really want newspaper advertising and have said so. Surveys
usually show well over S0 in favor of newspaper advertising; less than

Your advertising's first job is to win a friendly feeling for your product.
It stands to reason you will win more friends by running your advertising

If you want to sell more people you have to reach them when they are
