Replica of Printing Press Is
On Display in Public Library
M. Dale Newton, recently
retired from the printing bus
iness, has not abandoned his
interest in the graphic arts
The printing press, now on
display on the main floor of
the Public Library of Med
ford and Jackson county, was
built by Newton. Since the
library was source of much
of the information he utilized
in constructing the press,
Newton thought the library
was the proper place to ex
hibit it.
Judging from the number
of persons who inspect the
press, it was.
The press is a reproduction
of a 1828 model having one
of the early toggles. The wood
beams were shaped and the
mortices and tendons cut,
using only a hammer, chisel,
saw, auger and wrenches. A
local "Iron Monger" hand-
forged the handles, brackets
and crank, while a competent
local lathesman turned the
toggle parts in his machine
shop, Newton said.
May Be First Unit
The press is the first unit
in what Newton hopes may
become a complete display
including a printing office as
it looked in the 1850's, when
gold was discovered at Jack
sonville. Jacksonville is the place
such an exhibit should be
located in his opinion. And
he would like to see it in
the building which housed
Jacksonville's Table Rock
Sentinel, edited by Col. Wil
liam Green T'Vault. T'Vault
was Oregon's first newspaper
editor, having edited the
Oregon Spectator in 1845,
Newton reminded.
Such a display, he stated,
should include various types
of printing, lithograph and
engraving presses, tools and
materials.
There are no museums in
the west showing the develop
ment of printing equipment
and materials as used in the
building of western pioneer
America, Newton stated.
Another valuable inclusion
(as Newton envisions the mu
seum) would be a display and
demonstration of bookbinding
and illumination. A display
outlining the value of library
science would assist the view
ers in locating sources of
knowledge stored in books in
local, state, and national li
braries. Newton began his printing
career as a printer's devil on
the Garland Globe in Gar
land, Utah. He stayed with
the job 13 years. He set up
two columns of "brevities"
telling who got off, who got
on the trains, and why.
In 1943 he moved to the
Rogue River valley and set
up his own shop. He had
been in the printing business
20 years when he recently
sold out and "retired."
