Variance Request
For Sign Denied
By City Planners
A variance request to erect
a sign on the building occu
pied by the Oregon Bank on
East Jackson st. to identify an
insurance business was unani
mously denied by the Medford
planning commislon Thursday
nignt.
The lien ' would have re
placed a pre-existing sign of
me same size-Z4 Inches by 50
inches - advertising another
firm. The previous sign, how
ever, was non-conforming, and
according to sign provisions
for limited commercial dis
tricts, non-conforming signs
may not be replaced once they
nave been removed.
Clair Stumbo, owner of Al
lied Neon company, appeared
before the commission to urge
that the variance be granted.
Owner of the insurance firm
did not appear.
Commissioner Herb Part
ridge asked Stumbo if the
sign could be constructed flat
against the facade ot the
building, which would be per
missible under the regula
tions, rather than projecting
Into the front yard setback
area.
Stumbo replied he did not
feel the sign would be effec
tive or serve its intended pur
pose ll it were placed flush
against the front of the build
ing.
In other action, the commis
sion voted to recommend to
the city council that:
A change of zone from
single-family to multiple-fam
ily for property located at the
southwest corner of Crater
Lake ave. and McAndrews rd.
be granted.
Recommend Annexation
About 0.39 acres west of
Chestnut ave. and north of
Stewart ave. be annexed to
the city. The property owner
has requested annexation.
Part of the plat for Rogue
Valley Heights be vacated,
The owner ot the property
proposes to reiubdlvlde the
property.
The easterly part of the
east-west alley in Block fi,
Riverside Addition, be vacat
ed. The request was initiated
by the owners of Pulver's Mo
tel, who are contemplating
expansion ot the business.

st. north of Garfield rd.
A variance to the front
yard setback requirements for
property located at 148 South
Keene Way.
A variance to setback re
quirements in single -family
zone to enable the applicant
to erect a carport at 130
White Oak dr.
Plans for Contest
To Be Discussed
Preliminary plans for the
1063-64 United Nations Pil
grimage youth essay contest
will be discussed at a meet
ing 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug.. 17,
in the IOOF hall In Ashland.
The contest is sponsored by
all Independent Order ot Odd
Fellow and Rebekah lodges in
Jackson and Josephine coun
ties. Mrs. Riley Appelgate, con
test chairman, urges all no
ble grands of both orders in
the district to remind their
United Nation delegates of
this meeting.
Miss Monte Belle dim
ming!!, Grants Pass, winner
of the 1962-63 contest Is ex
pected to return to her home
early this week from her
award trip to New York and
the United Nations.
Story Hour Planned
At Local Library
A recorded story hour will
start at 10 a.m. Wednesday at
the Public Library of Med
ford and Jackson County for
children 4 to 10 years of
Bge.
- The new type program us
ing recordings from Jackson
County Curriculum Center
has been made possible by the
purchase of a new stereo
phonic record player with
funds donated by John Ring,
according to Omar Bacon, II
. brarian.
The program will consist of
children's classics, fairy
stories and other favorites re
corded by trained story tell
ers. A new program, will be
given each week while the
series continues through
Sept. 4.
