Small Worlds
Around Us

To Wain of Danger
Fortunately for their own
preservation they are exceed
ingly wary, winging away
with a great clatter of wings
at the approach of any sus
pected enemy. While the
group is feeding, sentries are
always posted at carefully se
lected points to alert the col
ony if danger is imminent.
Unlike the heron, the ibis
does not spear its prey, but
grabs it in its powerful bill.
It feeds on small fish, frogs,
snakes, and some water in
sects. A group of birds will
tramp around in a pond, stir
ring up the mud until the fish
have to come to the surface to
get a breath of air, there they
are grabbed by the wading
birds.
Rare Experience
It is a rare and exciting ex
perience to be within hearing
distance of a wood ibis rook
ery where hundreds of birds
are nesting, such as can be
found in some parts of the
Florida Everglades. Never in
your life did you ever hear
such a commotion. There are
squawks, groans, coughs,
wheezes, whimperings and
hoarse croaks, as both young
and adults give voice to their
feelings.
The nest, built of dry sticks,
Is usually close to the ground,
in mangrove trees whose roots
are immersed in water. There
are often half a dozen nests
in a single tree. Some nests
contain eggs while at the same
time other nests will hold
young birds, and both may be
in the same tree.
Common Names
In the swamps, swales and
wetlands of the south, the
wood ibis is known by several
local, common names; Flint
head, probably because the
head is bare, entirely naked of
feathers, and the skin is of a
dull grey color, maybe like
flint. For this same reason
other folks call the bird "Old
Baldy," or "Ironhead." The
amateur bird student, seeing
the wood ibis for the first
time, would undoubtedly say,
"Oh look at the storks" and
he wouldn't be too many miles
off course for the wood ibis is
a member of the stork family.
In fact it is the only American
representative of those long
legged birds that nest on old
world chimney pots.
Multnomah Hotel
Sale Effort Denied
Portland - (UPD - Reports
that active efforts are being
made to sell the 51-year-old
Multnomah hotel here were
denied Thursday by Gordon
Bass, senior vice president of
Western International Hotels.
Bass said his firm had a
12-year lease on the hotel. He
indicated that any hotel was
for sale if the right price
were offered but said sale
of the Multnomah was not
imminent.

Try and Stop Me
By BENNETT CERF
TOMMY RICHARDSON had a disturbing experience in a
small-town church one Sunday. The collection plate
was passed, and Richardson put in a bill. It came round a
second time and he
kicked in again. The
third time around he do
nated all the change he
had left. Then, lo and
behold! The ushers form
ed ranks to come down
the aisles for a fourth
time! At this point a little
old Jady seated next to
Richardson leaned over
and whispered to him,
"What do you think
they're going to do now?
Search us?"
A yourif? doctor, who had recently hung out his shingle in an
exclusive suburb, sot his first dinner invitation from the richest
couple in town. His wife was unable to accompany him, but
couldn't wait for his report when ho got home.
"I went over with a bang," he enthused, "and Mrs. Jones was
the most thoughtful hostess Imaginable. Not only did she serve
& splendid dinner, but she sat me down between two youn
mothers who haven't had their kids' tonsils out yet"

Report Deals With
Psychiatric Angle
Of Desegregation
By AL KUETTNER
UPI Correspondent
A major report will be re
leased this week end dealing
with the psychiatric aspects
of the desegregation of south
ern schools.
Like most such studies, its
findings will be controversial
- accepted as scientific data
by some, discarded by others.
The report will be publish
ed by the Southern Regional
Council and the Anti-Defamation
League. This adds to its
controversial aspects because
both have been active in pro
integration efforts.
The study was produced by
Dr. Robert M. Ciles, a Boston
psychiatrist, now residing
in Atlanta, He sppnt two years
gathering the clinical mate
rial. Studied Many Cases
He spent many hours with
Negro school children hav
ing their first experience in
integrated situations, with pre
school Negro youngsters, with
teachers and with white par
ents and pupils who were
both for and against desegre
gation. Coles, discussing the proj
ect in an interview prior to
release of his report, said the
conclusion of his study was
that Negroes can make their
way in integrated schools
without psychological stress
on their own lives or ill ef
fects on the lives of white
pupils.
During his racial study,
Coles said he often visited
the homes of Negroes, playing
on the floor with their young
children as a means of gaining
their confidence. It was in
such situations, he said, that
he learned Negroes develop
knowledge of racial differ
ences at a very early age.
Children Learn Early
"At four and five years of
age, these children know the
score," Coles said. "I have
been in homes where children

of this age have white and
colored dolls. They talk about
what the dolls are going to
be when they grow up. They
will place the white dolls in
a white society and they grow
up to have fine homes and
marriages. The Negro dolls
become maids and hold me
nial positions in society.
"I would ask them 'why'
and they would tell me, 'that's
the way it is in the world.' "
Although they now are go
ing through a revolutionary
transition, Negroes have
many barriers that are the
cumulative process of "300
years of subservience," Coles
said. Therein lies one of the
biggest problems in the cur
rent era of transition.
Coroner's Jury
Tells Ward Verdict
London-UIPD - A coroner's
jury ruled today that Dr.
Stephen Ward, the society
osteopath who touched off
Britain's scandal of the cen
tury, killed himself with an
overdose of sleeping pills.
It took the seven-man jury
only three minutes to bring
in its suicide verdict. Coroner
Gavin Thurston formally re
corded the finding that Ward
died of t'bilaterial softening
of the brain" resulting from
self-administered drugs.
Ward, who had medical
training and knew how much
to take, died of barbiturate
poisoning Saturday rather
than face sentencing on vice
charges.
Ward's family arranged
private burial services today
for the 50-ycar-old Anglican
minister's son and refused
flowers for the funeral.
Ward was already in a
drug-induced coma when the
old Bailey jury convicted
him of living off the earnings
of prostitutes last Wednesday.
He never regained conscious
ness to hear the sentence
which could have been 14
years In prison.

OLD CUSTOM - Fickle females beware for you may find
your effigy hanging in just such a weird scene. An old

in other nearby small Gorman-Catholic towns. Unknown

girl after the fickle parly announces marriage to another
person. (UPI).
