SHELTER FOR COWS-A ' herd of dairy
cowi is shown at the entrance of a special
"cow shelter' constructed on the Roberts'
dairy farm near Elkhorn, Neb. Thirty
cows and one bull, along with three at
tendants, have been herded into the shel
ter to begin a two-week test on how the
cattle survive in the shelter, which is built
to preserve a milk supply in case of
atomic war. Note the sign at the shelter

Children Suggest
Ways of Improving
U.S. Space Effort
Br ALVIN B. WEBB Jr.
Cape Canaveral - WPIt -If
from the mouths of babes
there always came words of
wisdom, Cape Canaveral
would be a land of giant fans,
ski-ramp launching pads and
"Saturday-only" astronauts. ,
The National Aeronautics
and Space administration has
a file cabinet full of proof
that the minds of America's
children, uncluttered by phys
ical laws and fiscal budgets,
display a genius for the im
aginative. Youngsters have carried
Into the space age their pen
chant for helping their eld
era spend money. Uninhibited
by worries about Income tax
1040 and the like, they bom
"bard NASA with scores of
letters monthly suggesting
ways to improve' and often
speed up the use of that $35
million America has commit'
ted to conquering Ihe moon.
Suggests Ramp
Sometimes, the letters are
Jn the form of helpful sug
gestions, such as the one from
Harry B. of Prescott, Arir.
"To help get your missiles
off, why don't you build an
overgrown skt ramp with a
half - mile slant 'at the right
end?"
If Harry's suggestion is ig
nored and U.S. scientists con
tinue to fire rockets in the
old - fashioned straight - up
manner, some attention might
be given to the matter of
Picnic Plans Are
Near Completion
Plans for the Jackson
County Family Picnic, spon
sored by the Jackson County
Democratic Central commit
tee, are. nearing completion,
according to K. C. Wernmack.
general chairman of the event.
The picnic will be held Sun
day, Aug. 25, at TouVelle
State park.
Musical entertainment will
include Cesar Muzzioli's ac
cordion band, piano music by
John Lusk of Lusk Music com
pany, and a band concert un
der the direction of Ralph E
Ettel. Vocals soloists will in-
elude Royal Harger, Donna
Mallard, Carmclla Wheat, Pat
Redmond and Carl Unruh.
Contests and games have
been scheduled and trophies
will be awarded the winners
in the old time fiddlers compe
tition, gold panning and
horseshoe pitching.
. There also will be trophies
for the winners of the bicycle
race. The course will be pa
trolled by local law enforce
ment officials to provide max
imum safety, Wernmark said.
A barbecued beef dinner
will be served, tickets for
which are being sold by a
large committee. Anyone
wishing further infromation is
advised to call 773-4040 or
7,73-4760.
all that black smoke that cov
ers the pad at blast off, says
Luther W. of Charleston,
S.C.:
"Why don't you put giant
fans to one side of the launch
ing pad? Then when you shoot
your missiles off, the smoke
would be blown away so you
could see what is going on."
There is a .suspicion, Lu
ther, that sometimes they
would just as soon not see
what is going on. Cape Ca
naveral has its bad days.
Navy Studied Pigaons
Grownups might be inclin
ed to snicker vat these youth-
tui ideas, uut trie U.S. Navy
once spent three years try
ing to figure out how to use
corn - eating pigeons to steer
guided missiles. The Navy
learned a lot about pigeons,
including their Inability to
guide rockets.
A fair number of NASA's
youthful fans volunteer not
only ideas but themselves for
I flights Into space - although,
ui-i-aaifiiiMijy, mere is a caicn,
as in the case of Tommy W.
of Chicago:
"I am interested In space
and would like to become an
astronaut, but it will have to
be on a Saturday,- as I have
to go to school during the
week."
