People write to ask me,
What is a hemangioma? Is it
malignant, and what can be
done for it in
the way of
trea t m e n t ?
Does it have
to be operated
on? A port
wine mark on
a baby's face
or arm is a
hemangio m a
made of many
Alvarei small blood
vessels. In the word heman
gioma, hem comes from
wuiq meaning Olood, aneio
comes from a word meaning
a mood vessel, and oma
means a tumor. Hence, a
hemangioma is a tumor form
ed out of blood vessels. Telan
giectasis (tel refers to the end;
angi refers to a blood vessel
and ectasia means dilation)
means a dilation of tinv end
arteries. Many an old person
nas two or three dozen telan-
giectasic nodules - about as
big as the head of a Din -
scattered over the skin of his
chest wall. Such tiny nodules
are harmless and unimpor
tant. A very dangerous and dis
tressing and hereditary type
of telangiectasis is to be found
in the nose, throat, gullet, and
stomach of a few human be
ings. The terrible thing about
the blood vessels in these tiny
tufts is that every so often
they break open and bleed ter
ribly; sometimes until the un
fortunate person is almost
dead. The "tufts" in the nose
or gullet that can be seen
through a lighted tube can be
burned off with an electric
needle.
Rarely, many good -sized
hemangiomas can be found in
a nver, or a single one can
be found in the wall of the
small bowel. Such a nodule
can cause indigestion, pain or
Dieeaing; and then it has to be
removed by a surgeon. Usual
ly, hemangiomas are not can
cerous. Many of those that ap
pear on the face of an infant
are best left alone by plastic
surgeons. The "port wine"
marks had better not be oper
ated on because the scar may
cause as much annoyance as
did the purplish snot A
"strawberry" mark should be
left alone because it will
usually- fade within a few
years.
More From Wife
Of Alcoholic
A woman who recently read
my column on the letter from
the wife of an alcoholic said
that I was so right in saying
mai wnen tne wife of a bad
tempered alcoholic leaves
him, she had better go to a
distant city and drop out of
sigm, omerwise he may kill
her as he has threatened to do.
My correspondent says that a
few weeks ago her sister was
murdered by her estranged
alcololic husband.
Two years ago, after 10
years of untold misery, try
ing to live with the man, she
took her children and left.
But the two years were full
of torture because the man
kept constantly threatening to
kill her; sometimes he would
come to the house and beat
her badly; sometimes he fol
lowed her with a gun, and
eventually he shot and killed
her. As my correspondent
says, she realizes now that
her sister should have gone
far away and dropped out of
sight.
Another woman writes me
to say that when her alcoholic
ex-husband was threatening
to kill her for having left
him, her brother got an in
genious idea; he told the man
that a job had been gotten
for him in Hong Kong and
gave him a one-way ticket to
that city. Naturally the fel
low never was able to save
up enough to get back home!
Hot Springs and Arthritis
Most people assume that
when a patient with arthritis
takes a course of baths at
some hot spring, and feels
better, this is because there
is something in the water
which cured him. Actually,
the experts do not believe
this. They believe that it is
only the heat that caused the
joints to feel better and to
work better. Also, when a
person goes to a "Spa" of the
European type, he gets a va
cation from work; he usually
is put on a diet; he is made
to take some exercise, he is
given some massage, and he
is made to go to bed early
With all this, he ought to
come home feeling better.
Dr. Alvarez discusses var
ious treatments for arthritis
in his booklet on the sub-
ject. You may get a copy of
it by sending 25 cents and a
self-addressed, stamped en
velope with your request for
it to Dr. Walter C. Alvarez,

Moines 4, Iowa.
In the Day's News
By FRANK JENKINS
Well, the nuclear test ban
treaty is signed.
So
WHAT NEXT?
1WIS is the situation:
The U.S.S.R. is a one
man dictatorship-and the One
Man has signed. That ends it
so far as the U.S.S.R. is concerned.
The next move is up to us-
and in our case the situation
is quite different. In the
U.S.A., the treaty MAKING
power is in the hands of the
President. Our President may
enter into a treaty with "the
advice and consent" of the
U. S. Senate.
But
Before a treaty negotiated
by the President (with the as
sistance of the State Depart
ment) can become effective,
two-thirds of the senators
PRESENT when the vote is
taken must agree to the treaty
terms.
THE big question now:
What will the t! B Son.
ate do with the nuclear ban
treaty that has just been ne
gotiated and signed?

FBI Arrests Man
Wanted in Burns
Columbus, Ohio - IUPH - FBI
agents Tuesday arrested
Thomas Gerald Lester, 25,
wanted for illegal flight to
avoid confinement for a bur
glary conviction in Burns,
Ore.
Lester was arrested on a
federal warrant at a local
grill, according to E. D. Ma
son, special agent in charge
of the Cincinnati Bureau of
the FBI. He was being held
here awaiting extradition to
Oregon.
Lester was sentenced in
Burns in 1962 to a four year
term for burglary. The sen
tence was suspended and he
was placed on probation.
TT'S hard to say.
Dissenters on our side
instinctively distrust any
thing that can be agreed upon
with the communists. They
think that in the very nature
of things there must be skul
duggery somewhere. How can
ANYONE trust a communist?
There is the case of the
state of Washington's Senator
Henry M. (Scoop) Jackson. In
an article in the Sunday New
York Times, he appears to say
that he is going to vote for the
treaty. But he hates to do it
and seems to be waiting for
something to turn up that will
enable him to vote against it.
He is bothered by seven as
sumptions that he thinks are
false and may be misleading
us.
SENATOR JACKSON is in
the position of the Dakota
farmer in Theodore Roose
velt's famous ranch story.
Teddy was on his way to
town when he met a neigh
bor. The neighbor's face was
long and gloomy. Teddy said
to him: "What's the matter,
Joe? You look like you had
just lost your last friend."
The farmer answered:
"I'm goin' to town to get
drunk and GOSH how I
dread it!"
Senator Jackson seems to
be in about the same fix.
There are probably other sen
ators who are sitting on the
same hot spot.
fPHE BIG question:
What SHOULD be done
about it?
T ET'S put it this way:
Only at Hiroshima and
Nagasaki has an atom bomb
been dropped. The Hiroshima
bomb had an explosive force
of about 20,000 tons of TNT.
It is estimated that the U.S.
has a nuclear stockpile equiv
alent to 35 BILLION tons of
TNT. It is guessed that the
Soviet stockpile equals 25
BILLION tons of TNT.
The biggest problem in the
world is to see to it that these
nuclear stockpiles are never
used.
CAN it be done?
Well, it had BETTER
be done if we want a world
for our children to live on.
