Californians Entertain
Travelers From Abroad
SAVE UPlTi 0N
By JOSEPH A. ST. AMANT
United Press International
Los Angeics - (UPll - If
you're a tourist from a for
eign land and you'd like to
have a free meal with a fam
ily in the Southern California
wonderland. a hospitable
chap named Donn Gift can
book you - no strings attach
ed. Donn with his-improbable
last name of Gift has set up
an organization called Los
Angeles - at - home and he's
got a list of at least 250 South
ern Californians who would
like to entertain for an eve
ning persons from other coun
tries. '
Gitt got the idea for his
group back in 1945 when he
made a trip to Denmark and
was entertained in a program
called "Meet the Danes." This
program was sponsored by
the Danish government.
Other nations such as Swe
den, the Netherlands and Nor
way do the same thing.
Gift came home and tried
to enlist prestigious organiza
tions in sponsoring a similar
program here but he had no
luck.
So last October he launch
ed one on his own. And with
no capital to speak of he has
made a good start.
Gift is a radio announcer,
engineer and publicist by pro
fession and he has drummed
up interest in his project
among air lines and travel
agencies.
He has received compli
ments and moral support ,
from the Los Angeles county j
board of supervisors. Mayor j
Samuel Yorty and numerous
other official groups and in
dividuals.
"The basic idea of my pro
gram," he said, "is to enable
the average tourist to meet
an American family and
learn how we live and think.
This will in a small way
make for better understand
ing among nations. The only
way to get to know a country
is to know the people who
live in it."
Gift has chosen as the mot
to of his fledgling organiza
tion the Spanish legend: "Mi
Casa es su Casa" which
means "My house is your
house."
Gift has had a good re
sponse to his efforts. "People
want to be friendly," he said,
"and they like to see foreign
ers." In the few cases he has
handled to date, correspond
ence has been started among
the principals and one family
told him they made a lasting
friendship.
There's no sweat in this
deal, as Gift explains it. You
entertain the foreign family
for one evening and you don't
pledge yourself to spend any
great amount of money.
It's strictly a friendly affair
and the foreigners and the
Southern California hosts
seem to enjoy themselves.

FLANE CARRIER-A new concept for aircraft ground han-dliii"-movine
the plane by carrying it-is shown in model
forn" as proposed by Roy P. Gibbens of the Martin Co. The
aircraft tsxis on and off the carrier and can be moved at
20 miles per hour. Annual savings per aircraft in fuel now
used in taxiing would be more than enough to pay for the
carrier vehicle. The model is on display in Washington. (UPI)
