Two Receptions Slated
At Gallery This Week
Two tocial events of special
. interest are scheduled at
Rogue gallery this week.
Tonight members of Rogue
V a 1 1 e y Art association, the
sponsoring organization, are
invited to a reception at the
" gallery, 220 West Main street,
beginning at 8 p.m. The event
will mark the re-opening of
the gallery following renova
tion, and the opening of a
new show.
Friday, August 9, a recep
tion will be held at the gallery
in honor of Dr. Enrico De-
: Maria, resident of Medford's
sister city, Alba, who arrived
in Medford this week. Also on
display at the gallery will be
a group of 10 paintings by
Italian artists which Dr. De
Maria brought with him as a
cultural exchange ges t u r e.
Medford artists made up an
art display which was sent to
Alba last year.
The public is invited to the
' Friday night event, and it is
pointed out that the Alba
paintings will not be up for
viewing until that evening.
Preceding the Friday night
reception, Dr. DeMaria will
be honored at a sherry party
given by the Rogue Valley
Council of the Experiment in
International Living, the
group responsible for bring
ing the Italian visitor here. It
will be held at the home of
, Robertson Collins, 108 North
Third St., Jacksonville. Guests
will be those who made fi
nancial contributions to the
project.

On display are sculpture
pieces by Mrs. Ruby Ralston,
Medford, and pottery made by
Robert Sperry, Seattle. Mrs.
Ralston holds a degree from
the University of Oregon, and
there she studied under Mark
Sponenburgh, the famous
Archlpenka, and Wayne Tay
som. Mrs. Ralston, who has lived
in Medford about 10 years,
works in a variety of ma
terials. Recently she studied
ceramics under Otto Wilda,
Southern Oregon college. The
exhibit will include one cer
amic sculpture, although
wood and other natural ma
terials are of primary interest
to Mrs. Ralston.
Mr. Sperry's exhibit will
include 43 pottery articles and
six panels of photographs of
larger pieces. A native of Illi
nois, Mr. Sperry studied at
the University of Saskatche
wan and at the Art Institute
of Chicago, where he later
taught. He worked with Peter
Volkous at the Archie Bray
foundation in Montana, has
had articles printed in Craft
Horizons and Design Quarter.

rived home after being in the
east for the past two months.
Enroute she stopped in Ameri
can Forks, Utah, where she
joined her daughter, Mrs. T.
R. Thompson, the former Miss
Shirley Dozier of Ashland.
The two continued to
South Lansing, N.Y., where
they met Mr. Thompson, for
merly associated with the
Hearin Lumber company in
Medford. He had completed a
four-week training course at
the Gilead Ministers' school.
The group toured Cornell
university at Ithaca, N.Y., and
in New York City they at
tended the Everlasting Good
News Assembly of Jehovah's
Witnesses at Yankee stadium.
On the return trip the
travelers visited Estes Na
tional park and Medicine Bow
National park.

Mrs. Tyrer visited friends
in Burbank, Calif., and to
gether they made a trip to
Catallna island, and to Knott's
berry farm. They also attend
ed two Los Angeles Dodger's
baseball games, and a horse
race.

For Lecture

Philip Hanson will appear

Gresham lectures, given an
nually by the Institute o; Re
naissance Studies of the Ore
gon Shakespearean, festival
Scheduled for 4 p.m. in the
Gresham room of the Ash
land Public library, proceeds
from the small admission
charge will benefit the festi
. al collection of rare books
and prints.
Mr. Hanson will base his
performance-readings on the
subject "The Imaginary
Forces." In his presentation,
he will examine the distinc
tions between imagination
and fancy, their operation in
the mind, Shakespeare's
methods of stimulating both,
and the means by which an
actor can successfully stir
the imaginative forces of his
audiance. He will base many
of his comments on "Henry
the Fifth" and the allusions
made in the play, in addition
to passages from other dra
matic works to illustrate his
theme.
Actor Hanson, recently re
turned from a North Ameri
can performance tour, is cur
rently rehearsing new ma
terial for a similar tour to be
gin in the fall of this year.

Schedules Film
A "true life adventure film"
will be shown at the next
meeting of the Roxy Anne
Gem and Mineral society, Fri
day, August 9, at 8 p.m. at
the Girls Community club
house. Refreshments will be served
and visitors are welcome.
P re-Opening
Events
Scheduled
A number of pre-opening
festivities are planned this
week in connection with the
first performance of the new
Peter Britt Gardens Music
and Arts festival in Jack
sonville. The premiere is set
for Sunday, August 11, at 4
p.m.
The festival association
board announced this morn
ing that Thursday, August 8,
the Greeters club of the Med
ford Chamber of Commerce
will hold a kaffeeklatsch at
the gardens. Interested busi
ness men of the area are in
vited to tour the gardens from
8 to 9:30 a.m. and the pro
gram will begin at 9 a.m. Mu
sicians who will play in the
two - week festival are to ar
rive in Jacksonville today and
rehearsals are to begin Thurs
day. Thursday night the board
of directors will sponsor a
dinner for the musicians in
the gardens at 6 p.m. Later a
reception for representatives
of the press and the musicians
will be held, also at the site.
Dessert and coffee will be
served.
Director of the orchestra
is John Trudeau, Portland. On
the opening day, August 11,
the concert will be at 4 p.m.
and thereafter the schedule
varies, with two concerts
some days and others but one.
Metzen Family
Visit Hornbrook
Hornbrook Mr. and Mrs.
D. F. Metzen and children,
Dan, Mary, and Jim, arrived
Friday to spend several week
with Mrs. Metzen's mother,
Mrs. Grace Quigley. From
last September until June of
this year, the Metzens made
their home in Morgantown,
W. Va., where Mr. Metzen
attended West Virginia uni
versity on a National Science
Foundation scholarship.
For six weeks this summer,
the family was in St. Paul,
Minn., while he attended the
University of Minnesota, also
on N.S.F. scholarship.
The Metzens made the trip
home by way of Montana,
Yellowstone Park, where they
spent two days, the Jackson
Hole, Grand Teton area of
Wyoming. In Mountain Home,
Ida., they called on Mr. and
Mrs. E. R. Burtner and fam
ily. Mrs. Burtner is the for
mer Madeline Chapman, and
the two women grew up to
gether in Hornbrook, and
were close friends.
