Testimony in Post
Suit Is Resumed
Atlanta-IUPD-Insurance man
George Burnett, whose pen
cilled notes resulted in a
Saturday Evening Post alleg
ing a rigged football game in
the Southeast Conference,
will resume testimony today
in Wally Butts' $10 million
libel suit against the maga
zine. Burnett testified Monday
he overheard former Georgia
athletic director Butts give
away football plays to Alaba
ma coach Paul (Bear) Bry
ant prior to the game be
tween the schools last Sep
'tember. The second day of the trial
is scheduled to resume at 10
ajn. EST (11 a.m. EDT). .
. Burnett testified under
questioning that he never
.said, the game was compro-imised.-
' "Did you say the game was
fixed?" Butts' attorney Ger
ald Schroder asked.
' "No," Burnett replied.
J "Did you say the game was
rigged?"
. "No."
Schroder asked Burnett if
' he had said the game was
', thrown, corrupt or a sell-out.
r The insurance man replied
"no" to each question. -"
Burnett's testimony was
. the highlight of the trial that
began Monday before federal
'Judge Lewis R. Morgan. A
' 12-man jury was empaneled
to hear the case expected to
last about two weeks.
Butts' suit was 'prompted
by a Post story published
March 22 which quoted Bur
. nett as saying he was acciden
tally hooked into a telephone
conversation in which he
heard Butts divulge team se
crets to Bryant in Tusca
loosa, Ala.
The Post artcle said the
notes Burnett made on the
conversation indicated the
two men had conspired to rig
the game, Alabama, a 17
point favorite, won 35-0.
Bryant has a $10 million
libel suit pending against
the Post in a separate action.
During the trial Monday,
Butts sat impassively a few
feet from the witness stand
and kept his eyes fixed on
. Burnett.
"Coach Butts proceeded to
give plays that I was writing
down," Burnett testified.

Invasion of
Alarming to
Portland - An extensive
caterpillar invasion of sage
lands in eastern Oregon is be
ing viewed with alarm by the
Oregon game commission,
Phil Schneider, state game di
rector, has reported.
Any substantial loss of sage
from this insect pest would be
extremely detrimental to
deer, antelope and sage
grouse, Schneider said , a n d
would be particularly acute
on winter ranges where sage
forms an important part of
the diet of these game birds
and animals.
According to Miles Lang
don, range specialist for the
game commission, the culprit
is a small moth larva which
has infected nearly 100 per
cent of all species of sage in
southeastern, central and
parts of northeastern Oregon.
Langdon reported the larva,
about three-fourths of an inch
long, rolls a few leaves into
a ball, apparently for a house,
and feeds on the leaves and

along the stem. The infection
is rather in, ?ispicuous in its
early stages, but quickly
erupts to the acute stage. Se
verely infected plants have a
brownish - yellowish appear
ance and are literally crawl
ing with the larva, Langdon
reported. Final effect on the
plants has not been deter
mined, but on a similar small
scale observed last year in
Lake county, defoliation in
some instances was sufficient
to kill the plants.
According to Schneider, an
inspection by range specialists
in Harney county revealed
that all sage lands in the
county have the infestation.
Areas at the elevation of
Burns show sage heavily in
fested. At higher elevations in
the Steens and Stinking Wa
ter mountains infestation ap
pears lighter but is affecting
nearly all sage plants.
Similar conditions were
found in Malheur county,
Schneider said. In the vicinity
of Burns Junction, Rome, Jor
dan Valley, and the White
horse and Mahogany moun
tains Infestation ranged from
complete defoliation at the
lower elevations to light con
tamination at the mountain
tops. Bend, Brothers, Prine
ville, Mitchell, John Day and
Columbia Basin sage lands
show varying degrees of lar
val infestation. California and
Nevada are also experiencing
this outbreak.
Schneider advised that at
present entomologists know
very little about the moth lar
va causing the damage. Until
recently it has gone unnoticed
and its identity is still not pos
itive. Extension Service ento
mologists at Oregon State Uni
versity are gathering infor
mation, and collections of lar
va are being marie in several
counties. Schneider said the
