Britons Upset Crack
U.S. Relay Team, But
Yanks Lead in Score
London - (UPI) - America's
record conscious 440 -yard
relay suffered a stunning tip
set in the first day of the
U. S. - Britain track and
field meet Saturday but the
American men piled up a 61
44 team and the U. S. wo
men managed to trail by only
one point, 28-27.
The U. S. men broke two
British "all comers" records
-Hayes Jones of Detroit
winning the 120-yard high
hurdles in 13.8 seconds and
Ralph Boston of Los Angeles
broad jumping 25 feet, 10
inches. The "world's fastest
human" Bob Hayes tied the
White City stadium record
by winning the 100-yard dash
in 9.5 seconds on the rain-
soaked track.
But even the great Hayes
couldn't save the U. S. 440
yard relay from defeat - a
real jolt to the Yanks be
cause U. S. Coach Payton
Jordan had forecast they
would break the world rec
ord of 39.8 seconds.
Instead it was the British
foursome that tied a world
record by winning in 40.0
seconds, matching the mark
for running this relay around
two turns. The Britons -
Pete Radford and the three
Jones Boys, Ron, David, and
Berwyn - won by a strike
as anchor-man Hayes crossed
the line in 40.1 seconds for
the U. S. team.
All told the U. S. men won
seven of Saturday's event-
a brilliant showing but be
low the pre-ineet forecast of
nine victories.
On the other hand, the
U. S. women's team which
was soundly whipped on this
European lour by Russia, Po
land, and West Germany, won
three of five events and
came within an eyelash of
holding the team lead at the
end of the first day. The meet
concludes Monday.
In addition to Jones,
Hayes, and Boston, other U.
S. men winners were Bob
Humphreys of Los Angeles
in the discus throw with 185
feet, 9 inches; Tom O'Hara
of Loyola of Chicago in the
one mile run in 4:03.0; Gene
Johnson of California in the
high jump with six feet,
8 inches, and Ulis Williams
of Arizona State in the 440
yard run in 46.7 sccondss.
Besides winning the 440-
yard relay, Britain picked up
a surprise victory in the
hammer throw as Howard
feet, 4 Inches and an ex-
Payne heaved the weight 207
pected win in the six-mile
run as Ron Hill led the way
in 27:56.0.
Sandra Knott of Cleveland
broke the American record
for 880 yards to win that
event in the women's compe
tition in 2:10.7, nosing out
Britain's Joy Catling. Other
U. S. women winners were
Rosie Bond of Riverside,
Calif., in the 80-metcr high
hurdles in 11.1 seconds and
Cynthia Wyatl of Honolulu
in the shot put with 48 feet,
4'2 inches.
British women victors were
Susan Piatt in the javelin
with 166 feet, 8'-2 inches and
Dorothy Hyman in the 220
yard dash in 23.8 seconds.
A heavy rain fell up to
the start of the meet, soak
ing the track so badly that
water had to be swept off
for the first event. The bad
weather also held the crowd
to 5.000 in the 42,000 seat
arena.

Johnny Blanchard's two
booming home runs and the
dazzling New York Yankee
infield combined Saturday to
produce a 3-2 victory that
snapped the Baltimore Ori
oles' four game winning
streak.
Relief pitcher Bill Stafford
saved Al Downing's seventh
triumph when he entered with
two on and one out in the
ninth inning after the Orioles
had cut the Yankee lead to
one run. Stafford deliberate
ly walked Russ Snyder to fill
the bases and then threw only
one pitch to Luis Aparicio,
who hit into a double play.
Earlier, in the sixth inning,
a brilliant double play start
ed by third baseman Clcte
Boyer bailed Downing out of
a jam.
Tie The Score
Blanchard hit his eighth
homer of the season to tie
the score at 1-1 in the fifth
inning and put the Yankees
ahead with another homer in
the seventh.
The Yankees scored what
proved to be the winning run
in the eighth when Tom
Tresh walked, went to third
on a single by Joe Pepitone,
and scored on a wild pilch
by Milt Pappas.
Rookie Don Wert drove
home three runs and Rocky
Colavito knocked in two runs
to pace the Detroit Tigers to
a 7-5 victory over the Cleve
land Indians in the American
league's only other afternoon
game.
The Tigers staked Phil Re
gan to a 6-2 lead in the third
inning, but the big righthand
er weakened in the seventh
and Terry Fox came on to
preserve the victory. Woodie
held and Al Luplow hit hom
ers for Cleveland.
Relief pitcher Arnold Ear-
Icy walked home the winning
run in the seventh inning to
give the Washington Senators
