Sheriff With Limited
Experience Nabs Bear
Pauline, Neb.-fllTO-Bob Anderson, the sheriff of Adams
county, has captured his share of criminals, but confesses
to limited experience with bears.
- After his meeting with Martha, he's not sure he cares
for bears.
It's not that Martha was disagreeable. Uncooperative, may
be, but for a 400-pound black bear, she was rather friendly.
. That doesn't mean the sheriff had an easy Job when he
set out to catch her and get her back home.
' Bob and his deputy, Jake Thiel, were alerted that Martha
bad wandered away from the Grover Stapleman place near
here. Stapleman has a string of donkeys he hauls around
to stage donkey baseball games for fairs and festivals. He
also kept Martha.
While Stapleman was out drumming up business, Martha
decided to wander. Anderson, Thiel and three other bear
"hunters" followed tips and tracked down Martha.
They spent about two hours in the chase, during which
Martha got tangled in some barbed wire and foundered for
a while in a V-shaped tree trunk.
Anderson, who's pretty fair with a lasso, finally used
some borrowed rope to capture her.
, He and Martha were about two miles from Stapleman's
place. So they began trudging down a hot, dusty road. Every
now and then, perhaps because of the heat, Martha decided
to sit and rest in the middle of the road.
A friendly farmer in a pickup truck finally gave them
a lift the last quarter-mile. -
Said the sheriff: "I've worked with horses and cattle,
but never before with a bear named Martha."

read that it gives results

The test is called the UCG

be of tremendous value to
many obstetricians and others.

doctor for months, has been
giving them shots of B12,
often for some nervous dis
tress, or some pain, I always
wonder if the medicine has
any value in these cases, or if
its value has ever been demon
strated clearly.
Recently a doctor wrote to
the American Medical Asso
ciation asking this question,
and Dr. Desmond S. Doherty
of W a s h i n g t o n, D. C, an
swered that he doubted if
there ever has been any evi
dence presented to prove that
B12 is of value outside ot tne
treatment of a primary (the
hereditary or pernicious) type
of anemia.
The dose needed for anemia
is extremely small. Recently
a great expert on diseases of
the blood emphasized the fact
that only a few thousands of a
thousandth of a gram are
needed, and this dosage is
really needed perhaps once a
month!
The "vitamin B complex" Is
also employed extensively by
us physicians in an effort to
help people with pains and
paralyses: but, again, I Know
I of no good proof that, used in
this way, the drug has any
value. A patient can get bet
ter while being treated, but
this does not prove that the
medicine helped.
Boric Acid For Babies
Drs. Marie A. Valdes-Da-pena
and James B. Arey tell
of a mother who put boric
acid on her baby's diaper. The
next day he died. There are
172 such known cases of boric
acid poisoning, and in 83,
death resulted.
Danger arises, if only be
cause (as when I was a med
ical student) doctors for years
thought that boric acid was a
good and mild and harmless
killer of germs. Then some
years ago, I began to hear of
these fatal cases, and it began
to be apparent that the pow
der could be very dangerous.
