Strang Morganicr Duck
Eati LUtl Eli But Fish
There is considerable dif
ference in ducks. Although
they belong to the same fam
ily, no two species are aiiK.e
in their method of feeding,
choice of food, habits of mi
gration, or requirements of
survival. What one s pecies
goes for, another species goes
from. In fact there are some
that are about as unducklike
as if they were something else
besides ducks.
Among the many species of
the far-flying wildfowl that
we class under the all-embrac
ing name of wild ducks, there
are some that almost contra
dict being members of the
family. Yet these peculiar
ones hobnob with the others
as if they were identical. Any
one that watches wildfowl
sailing into light with a push
ing splash, thinks very little
if at all, about there being
such a difference in what they
are watching.
Merganser Is Unusual
After the sliding impact
with the water has lost its
forward momentum, the tail
of this oddbill duck wiggles
iust as saucily as any of the
others. But if you look closely
you will notice one or more
traits which are radically at
odds with the majority.
The canvasbacks, mallards.
blue-bills, and many of the
others look and act like ducks,
but the American Merganser,
with the chic looking little
hood on the top of his head,
is unusual.
. The merganser has a chic
little crown, or hood, on the
top of his head. This bit of
finery can be elevated by its
owner, into a small, tufted top
knot, but for some unknown
reason he seldom raises it. it
may be only for the admiring
eves of the little female, in
the privacy of their own
home.
The bills of most ducks are
covered with a sensitive skin,
provided inside the bill with
a comb-like structure, or la
mella. In the merganser this
is modified into tiny teeth
which makes possible the
grasping of slippery fish on
which this species of duck
feeds.
This arrangement of teeth
gives the merganser the de
scriptive name of "sawbill."
The presence of teeth in a
duck is certainly unducklike;
unlike about all the other
members of the clan, and un
like them too, this character
eats little else except fish.
The feet of the merganser
have small, paddle r shaped
hind toes, which puts this
duck in the classification of
diving ducks.

They dive for fish, catching
the fish in its own element
The nests are placed in hoi
low trees, near water, and the
eggs follow the unusual by be
ing as round as a ball and en
cased in a . very thick, hard
shell. Both of these character
istics are unlike most ducks.
In flight, the merganser
carriers the head straight out
in front, while the wings beat
the air furiously. These odd
ball ducks are found in nearly
every section of the U. S., mi
grating south in the late fall.
Some travel as far south as
Mexico.
Inasmuch as the mergan
ser's sole food consists of fish,
this duck is not particularly
relished by duck hunters, as
the flesh has a decided fishy
taste. The merganser, with
the saucy topknot, and the
sharp teeth, goes all the way
in being almost unique among
the wildfowl.
RIVER DRYING UP - Weeks of near-record hot weather
and little or no rain have all but taken the bottom out ol

Travelers To Cuba
To Lose Passports
Washington -WPU- President
Kennedy says the government
will lift the passports of 58
U. S. students who ignored
a State Department ban on
travel to Cuba and is consid
ering further steps "in regard
to a few who are not students
but who are Communists."
Kennedy told his news con
ference Thursday that ex
penses of the student junket
were paid by Fidel Castro s
government and said some of
the leaders of the student
erouD "it seems to me, are
definitely Communists."
"Some of the students may
be just young men and women
who are interested in Droaa
ening their horizons," he said.
"But I think they should have
some concern for the security
and foreign policy objectives
of the United States."
The students, led by Levi
Laub of Columbia university,
traveled to Havana via
Prague, Czechoslovakia, to
avoid State Department re
strictions on their passports.
