llavy Submarine
Picks Up Seven
Persons at Sea
San Francisco - (UPD - A re.
tired Navy vice admiral and
ix crew Mien, who abandoned
a $250,000 luxury yacht dur
ing a cruise from Hawaii to
California, were picked up by
a Navy submarine shortly be-
fore midnight Wednesday
night about 60 miles south
west of San irancisco.
Vice Adm. Gerald Bogan,
one-time commander of the
U.S. 1st Task Force, and his
crew cast themselves adrift
from the 104-foot yacht, Free
dom II, In a 14-foot boat Wed
nesday afternoon. There was
no immediate explanation for
their action.
A Coast Guard spokesman
laid the seven men were pick
ed up by the USS Razorback
at 11:50 p.m. (pdt) Thursday
and all Dresumably were in
good condition. The subma
rine said they would be taken
to San Diego.
There was no immediate
indication of the fate of the
Freedom II, which was re
ported still afloat at dusk 12
miles from where the crew
men were picked up.
The yacht, a very plushy
converted Navy patrol vessel,
was reported to have carried
a larder which included pate
de foi gras, filet mignon steaks
and champagne.
It sailed from San Diego
to Honolulu several months
ago, with Edward Gilchrist as
captin, to operate under char
ter. However, Gilchrist re
mained in Hawaii when the
vessel departed for the West
Coast on July 16, and Bogan
was asked to make the return
trip as skipper. .

lion dollar fire destroyed the
main sawmill of the Tile Knot
Pine Mill here Wednesday aft
ernoon, razing five buildings.
Owner Phil Dahl said re
building would begin intme
diately. Redmond firemen, 90 vol
unteers, and two fire trucks
from Bend battled the flames
for IVi hour before they
were controlled.
The planer, dry kilns,
stacted lumber, green chain
and storage sheds were saved,
but the fire destroyed the
main sawmill, the boiler
house, the barker and chip
per and the fuel house.
Dahl said (he fire apparent
ly started in the mill s weld
ing department. He said an
investigation will be conduct
ed. The mill, which employed
about 200 men, provided the
city's second largest payroll.
Vcrn McGowan, a volun
teer fireman and president of
Vie Redmond Chamber of
Commerce, was hospitalized
after being overcome by
smoke. His condition was re
ported not serious.
A plan to spray the fire
with a borate solution from a
plane was discarded because
of the hazard from tall smoke
stacks at the n'lill.

fishing industry strike ended
in failure Wednesday when a
union - management meeting
broke up after an hour with
no settlement being reached.

ermen and Allied Workers
Union, representing soma 10,
000 salmon fishermen and at
lied workers, were called to
a meeting with the B. C. Fish
eries association by the pro
vincial government's c h 1 e I
conciliation officer, R. G.
Clements.
The meeting followed a
session Tuesday between
Clements and union officials,
who called the strike July 13
to back up demands for in
creased salmon prices and
wage boosts for shorcworkers
and tendermcn.

East Germans Use
Boat in Escape

East German family of
five dashed to freedom in a
motor boat, West German bor
der police said today.
A 50-ycar-old employee of
the East German Navigation
Office at Wittenberg placed
his family in one of the boats
he used on his job, gunned
the engine and reached the
West German bank of the
Elbe river without being spot
ted by Communist guards
Wednesday afternoon, police
said.
When Communist border
guards were not looking, he
picked up his family and a
skeleton supply of household
goods and crossed the 100
yards that divided them from
freedom, police said.

BOMARC MISSILE - This 50-foot Air Force IM-99 "Bomarc"
air defense missile will be on display at the Big Y Shopping
center, Medford, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 3 and 4, from
9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Manufactured by Boeing, the Bomarc is a
long range, high altitude weapon designed to intercept and
destroy enemy aircraft or missiles before they can reach
their targets in this country. Technicians of the orientation
group, U.S. Air Force, stationed at Norton Air Force base,
San Bernardino, Calif., will set up the Bomarc display and
will be on duty to answer spectators' questions about the
missile. The display Is sponsored by the Medford Composite
Squadron, Civil Air Patrol.

blasted Wednesday toward a
target 7,000 miles out to sea
off the Philippine Islands.
It was the second Atlas mis
sile to be launched within
two days. The first was
launched Tuesday - only a
few hours before a satellite
believed to have been of the
Discoverer scries was launch
ed toward polar orbit from
this same Pacific Coast mis
sile base. The Air Force did
not give the details of the
satellite launch,
