Youngster Drowns In Wake of Vessel

year-old Steven Alcirich of
Knlama drowned when he
was awrpt Into the Columbia

the wake of a freighter about
a half mile east of here Suiv
day.
Skin-diving and drawing
operations to recover the body
resumed today.
The CowllU county slier
fif's office at Kelns. Waili.
said the wave was from the
Philippine Mail, which was
going to Portland.
The boy was among a group
of about 25 persons, many of
them fishermen, on the bank
of the river when the wave
hit.
His ather, David Aldrich,
29, Kalama, and several oth
er persons were washed Into
the river. The father was
taken to a hospital at Long
view, Wash., with severe arm
lacerations.

Lyn Seely to
day faced the possible loss of
her right hand as a result
of being mauled by a circus
bear she tried to pet through
the bars of the animal's cage.
Lyn's physician, Dr. Elliott
Hiirris of Santa Susana, Calif.,
said Sunday the girl's hand
might have to be amputated.
However, he said no decision
would be made until the band
ages arc removed at the end
of the critical time period of
48 to 72 hours.
The youngster was attend
ing an afternoon performance
of the Ted Duanc Circus in
Santa Susana on Friday when
she ducked under a sawhorsc
and put her hand into the
cage of a Hamalayan bear to
pet him.
Her Index finger was bit
ten off, and tendons of all the
muscles and veins in the wrist
and forearm were chewed
through It took more than
200 stitches to close the
wounds In the torn hand.
The doctor said that even
if the hand is saved, it will
probably be years before Lyn
is able to use the fingers
again.

Stevie was just a year -old
baby he bit his new brother -we
couldn't tell whether It
was Jealousy or e fierce love.
When it continued we tried
spanking, reasoning, depriv
ing him of toys and treats. He
does It less now.

times Stevie would probably
get his teeth kicked in ior
making the wrong use of
them. In these enlightened
days, however, his parents,
particularly his mother, will
be called on the carpet for
producing so "unloveable" a
child. Mrs. U.'s rescue-trail
starts with one word: Why?
Is Stevie just a loving child
who wants to "taste" any
thing - animal, vegetable,
mineral - which attracts him?
That may explain his early
biting of the baby. Or is he
hungry - in need of more
eating and chewing activity?

that he feels unloved and can
only get a rise out of his
mother, lather, siblings, and
neighbors by sinking his teeth
into something that yells. Our
suggestions: Mrs. u. must re
ward him for playing "nice
ly," as well as nip him
promptly (once is enough) for
a bite. Someone will bite him
back one of these days, and
that may help too . . . But
there's the chance that Stevie
is emotionally disturbed. A
normal happy child doesn't
bite after being tripped up
once or twice. Mrs. U. may
have to make Stevie her Proj
ect Number One, enlisting out
side aid if warm gobs of home
made "loving-up" don't help
him become loveable.
