Kditor'i notei The Faratlr Council consists of a Judge,

Morion R.-I'd like to know
where my mother disappears
to each morning.
Mr. B. R. - I'll tell, but
don't let him try to stop me.
Morion R.-I support my 74-year-old
mother in her own
Bronx apartment. She held
on to a job in a bake shop
by lying about her a-ge until
I took over a year ago and
she promised to stay home
and take it easy. The other
day I called her at 8:30 a.m.
and got no answer. I went to
her place and found it empty.
No one had seen her leave. I
waited around and was about
to call the police when she
returned around 3:30. She
won't explain,
Mn. B. R.-My son can't get
it through his head that I
can't bear doing nothing
while I have two good hands
and feet. I'm not ready to
vegetate. I intend to continue
going where I went that day.
I've been slipping off that
way because I knew he'd
never consent. At 7 a.m.,, I
walk to a nursing home where
they let me help dress and
feed the patients. After break
fast I write letters for those
whose hands shake and read
to those with poor eyesight.
Yes, I'm a volunteer aide.
Th Council: "Not by bread
alone," says the Bible (and
that covers a roof and some
cash, too) docs one live. Even
though you've provided the
creature comforts for your
mother, Morton, she can't
really "take it easy" for she's
uneasy on two counts. She
feels useless and she feels iso
lated. In one courageous coup,
she remedies those aches.
What she docs for the incapa
ciated unfortunates in the
nursing home is more than
balanced, in her mind, by
what they do for her. ... In
a report on healthful aging
Dr. Edward Borlz recom
mends living to a ripe old
age, as against existing until
"death. Essential for this, he
reminds us, is a "sense of con
tribution." Fortunately, op
portunities to serve abound.
Now that Mrs. R. has found
one, Morton would do well to
line up others for her. How
about threading needles and
cutting fabrics at a Cerebral
Palsy workshop?

PUC Levies Fine
On Hermiston Man
Salem -0IPI)- Harold Wil
kins, Hermiston, has been or
dered to pay $4,200 in penal
tics for operating his truck
commercially while licensing
it as a farm vehicle.
The penalty was levied by
Public Utility Commissioner
Jonel C. Hill as a part of his
crackdown on truckers who
pose as farmers to avoid pay
ing state fees charged to com
mercial operators.
PUC investigators said Wil
kins had been using his truck
and trailer combination to
haul baled hay from a farm
near Echo to the Pendleton
Grain Growers' Feedville ter
minal. Last week Hill fined two
other Umatilla county truck
ers $3,000 for using farm
plates to avoid the license
fees.

Prayer For Growing I
Old Gracefully
Some years ago I read a
prayer for the aged which, as
I remember, went somethink
like this: Dear
Lord, I real
ize that I am
growing old.
Help me to
keep from
g e 1 1 i n g too
talkative
from getting
boresome
and from get-
Alvarei v i g jjusiuvc
and vehement about many
subjects about which I know
little. May I keep remember
ing that simply because I
know one subject well, this
does not mean that I am
equally an expert on other
subjects.
Help me to watch the faces
of those about me so that I
will know when I have said
enough. Help me to keep from
developing the monologue
habit. Teach me to listen as
well as to speak. Help me to
get quickly to the point of my
story and then to quit. Help
me to avoid giving a biog
raphy of all the persons whom
I mention. Help me to avoid
giving minute details about
everything.
Help me to realize that if I
am to have young friends, or
even old friends, I must not
drive them away by long re
citals of my discomforts and
hardships and the injustices
that have been done to me.
May I never speak of the in
gratitude of my children; may
I never describe my backache
except to my physician.
Help me to see that, if I am
to keep my old friends and
find new ones, I must be
friendly, and I must make it
worthwhile for people to
come and see me and chat
with me. As we visit, I must
give them some pleasure and
some mental stimulus, or they
will not come back. Help me
to have a real interest in my
guests, sympathy for them,
and concern over their prob
lems. Teach me to listen pa
tiently to their tales of woe.
Help me to keep up some cor
respondence with my rela
tives and my friends.
Help me to keep from get
ting the idea that I can and
must, direct the lives of
those about me. Help me to
mind my own aflairs and not
to tell other people what to
do. Help me to keep from be
ing bossy. Help me to see that
I will be lucky if I take care
of my own life wisely.
Above all things, oh Lord,
help me to remain kindly;
keep me from becoming bit
ter; keep me from going into
tirades about the President or
some of his actions that I dis
like. Help me to avoid explod
ing in wrath over little annoy
ances. Help me to keep from be
coming miserly and parsimon
ious in matters of money.
Help me, dear Lord, to keep
what redeeming sense of hu
once have had. Help me to
make allowances for the
weaknesses and irritabilities
of some persons I may meet;
goodness knows, they will
have to make allowances for
the defects and irritabilities
they will find in me. Amen.
Nervous Rectal Pain
In any big clinic some men
and women are seen with pain
in the region of the end of the
bowel pain for which no
cause can be found by looking
in with an electrically-lighted
tube, or by X-raying the
colon. It is conceivable that
some of these pains are due to
cramps in muscles in the pel
vis. In the cases of men there
could be a cramp in the pros
tate gland. I have seen many
persons with such pain and I
never could find any cause
for it. Expert rectal men
(proctologists) also failed to
find anything wrong.
One feature that makes me
pretty sure that the pain is of
nervous origin is the fact that
usually it remains steady
perhaps day and night, and us
ually it is found in persons
who are somewhat tense or
nervous or anxious about
their health. I never saw a
patient with such pain who
came to any bad end, so far as
I could find out. He or she
never developed a cancer.
The discomfort was usually
described as a gnawing ache,
or a feeling of a cramp, or
rarely of a stabbing.
Relief can sometimes be
brought about by walking
around, or perhaps by getting
into a tub of warm water. The
taking of quinine or some sed
ative can be tried. Usually the
pain has nothing to do with a
movement of the bowels, or
the presence of gas in the
bowel, or the passage of gas.
Usually these people are not
constipated .
I have seen many of these
persons who have had their
little "tailbone" (coccyx) re
moved, and I never saw one
who was helped by the operation.
Persons who have pain
caused by nervousness will
want to read Dr. Alvarez' lit
tle booklet, "Triumph Over
Nervousness." You can get a
copy by sending 25 cents and
a sell-addressed, stamped en
velope with your request for
it to Dr. Walter C. Alvarez,

Moines 4, Iowa.
Social Activities
Of Middle Teens
Confuse Parents
By DAVID NYDICK
UPI Education Specialist
The social activities of chil
dren in the middle teens some
times are confusing to par
ents. A general understand
ing of their usual social be
havior and needs will help
adults to realize what should
and should not be expected.
For instance, Ann, an at
tractive 16-year-old high
school student, has been a suc
cessful scholar and is quite ac
tive in extracurricular activ
ities. Her mother has been
concerned about her social development.
Is the girl growing up too
fast? Should she be going out
on dates, attending dances,
and be so interested In boys?
The girl is concerned con
stantly with her appearance.
She also has shown an ex
tremely strong interest in
various causes and supporting
the underdog.
Typical of Desires
These are typical character
istics of the desires of a girl
in her middle teens. She
takes an increasingly broader
view of national and interna
tional affairs. She is searching
for prestige among her peers
and within the school. Her in
terests become more adult.
She will gain satisfaction as a
spectator at lectures and con
certs. She becomes more dig
nified and displays increased
self-control.
Her needs follow similar di
rection. She should be treated
as an adult member of the
family. She should be allowed
to go to dances and on dates.
Naturally, reasonable restric
tions are in order. A dance
should be properly chap
eroned. Dates should be in
groups with properly planned
entertainment.
What about a boy of this
age? His social interests and
needs are very much the
same. Physically, he has
caught up with the girls. He
still will be interested in
sports as an active player. He
will want to develop a strong
body. He likes girls to be
friendly, well-groomed, and
to have a sense of humor.
Parents who recognize and
understand the characteristics
and needs of their children in
the middle teens will find
their job much easier. This
age group really is blossom
ing. They are anxious to be a
part of the total society.
Independence Desired
They are cooperative and
yet desire independence. They
want to obtain respect and
prestige. They will have a
great deal of enthusiasm in
all their activities. Give them
good direction and guidance
and the results will be reward
ing. Proper standards and re
strictions are particularly im
portant to this age group.
They need a feeling of inde
pendence. The desire to im
prove their lot creates much
ambition. This may be a bit
premature. Treat them as an
adult in deciding with them
what these standards and re
strictions will be.
They will be more cooper
ative in adhering to them, as
well as gain a feeling of im
portance in being part of the
decision. Do not hesitate to
impose some of your own
ideas but be willing to give
an explanation. These child
ren will object to authority
only when it seems as if they
arc losing face.
This age group is basically
looking for recognition.
