Forest Lookout
Towers Developed
Madison. Wis. - A "new
look" forest lookout tower,
with interchangeable strut
tural timbers and panelized
prefabricated cab, has been
designed with the aid of sci
entists at the U. S. Forest
Products Laboratory here,
working with engineers of
the Forest aervlce and a Se
attle, Wash., firm.
Designed for quick, easy
assembly in remote areas to
which the timbers and panels
can be brought by helicopter
if necessary, the tower can be
erected in heights from 40 to
nearly 100 feet, according to
the 1962 annual report of the
Forest Service laboratory
iust issued here.
The Forest service plans to
build the first tower of the
new design, a 63-footer, this
year at the Heybrook lookout
on the Skykomisn district
Snoaualmie National forest.
in Washington, according to
J. Herbert Stone, Portland
regional forester. If the pro
totvoe tower proves success
ful, the design may be stand
ardized for similar towers on
national forests elsewhere in
the West.
The annual report also re
views findings In many other
