Tour Starts For
Western Oregon Group
The Bureau of Land Man
agement's Keno and Galice
rds. are principal points of
interest in a tour of the Med
ford district, being taken this
week by representatives of 18
western Oregon counties, ac
cording to District Manager
Donald J. Schofield. The tour
is today and Friday.
A similar tour is arranged
annually for the five-member
road committee of the Asso
ciation of O and C counties.
The committee has functioned

this year has invited repre

Oregon counties to participate,

field said.
The group left by bus from
the Medford district office
this morning and traveled to
Hyatt lake via a road recently
completed by purchasers of
BLM timber, past Howard
Prairie lake to the Keno rd.
The road committee is par
ticularly interested in the
Keno rd. because it was con
structed with appropriated
funds which the Association
of O and C counties recom
mended be made available for
that purpose, according to
Schofield. Grading of the 27.5
mile road was completed a
year ago, with rock surfacing
planned during the next year.
Salem -HIPH- Atty. Gen.
Robert Y. Thornton said Wed
nesday he has not been asked
to give a legal opinion on the
right of acting Gov. Ben Musa
to appoint a member of the
Slate Welfare Commission.
"I have received no inquir
ies except from members of
the fourth estate," Thornton
said.
He explained he refuses to
give informal off-the-cuff
opinions on cases where he
might be asked to present a
formal opinion.
Only state officials can re
quest a formal opinion from
the attorney general.
To Attend Meeting
Meanwhile, the new Musa
appointee, Ralph W. Perry
Sr., Hood River, is expected
to attend his first Welfare
Commission meeting here Fri
day.
Warne Nunn, administra
tive assistant to Gov. Mark
Hatfield, said the oath of of
fice for the position has been
mailed to Hood River for Per
ry to sign.
Musa made the appoint
ment Tuesday, while Hatfield
was attending the National
Governors' convention in Mi
ami. The governor expressed
annoyance and accused Musa
of violating a gentleman's
agreement not to make any
major decisions while he was
out of the state.
Hatfield is scheduled to ar
rive back in Oregon tonight.
It connects the Dead Indian
and Klamath Falls highways.
The group also will visit
the just completed Surveyor
and Topsy recreation sites and
will see brush eradication and
tree planting projects today,
reluming to Medford tonight.
Friday the group will travel
westward to the Galice rd.,
which was the first one con
structed in the Medford dis
trict with appropriated funds.
Other points of interest will
include recreation sites devel
oped by the Bureau of Land
Management and Josephine
county, and the recently com
pleted Almeda bridge across
the Rogue river at Grave
crock.
