people with a camera, try to
get the bear to come closer
and closer to the car, tempt
ing him with food. It is fool
ish to tease the bear until
he gets angry,
A bear is always danger
ous, especially if he gets re
sentful, as when he thinks
that a person Is withholding
food from him. Many a bear
with a nasty temper has tak
en such a swipe at someone
that he has torn off half his
face. A female bear with
cubs is particularly danger
ous because, if a person hap
pens to come between her
and a cub, she is likely to
attack viciously,
The rangers in our west
ern parks keep telling people
never to feed or molest or
try to make friends with i
wild animal, especially a
bear. When the car is parked,
windows should be kept
closed, also the doors; be
cause bears smell any food
that Is in the car and then
they will try to get at it. A
bear can tear the top out of
a convertible.
Even deer are dangerous,
because they will sometimes
strike at someone with their
sharp hoofs. A big buck can
make a nasty wound with his
antlers.
Another reason why the
rangers beg people not to
feed wild animals in a park
is that when the animals get
dependent on tourists for
their food, they forget how
to forage for themselves.
Also , when they become
dangerous, or when they be
come a nuisance to campers,
they may have to be shot.
The person who feeds a bear
not only exposes himself to
a great danger, but he is like
ly to Injure the bear and the
bear s cubs.
Think of Handicapped
It is remarkable how we
human beings often fail to
think of the needs of people
who are handicapped and
have trouble getting about.
To show how thoughtless we
can be; until recently it
seems never to have occurred
to anyone that the big tiers of
beautiful stone steps outside
of many public buildings and
churches are nice to look at,
but they keep out many han
dicapped persons', perhaps

persons on crutches, persons
in wheel chairs, or persons
short of breath with a bad
heart, or a bad emphysema
(damaged lungs.)
It is true that in some
cases the person can enter
through a side door, where
he or she may find an eleva
tor. Doubtless, in the build
ings of the future, such an
entrance will always be
made, and placed where it
will be easily available to all
persons who cannot climb a
long flight of steps like that
which leads up into the Capi
tol at Washington.
I thought of this problem
as I read a "release" from
the Association for- Crippled
Children and Adults (239
Park Ave. South, New York
City 3). The association now
has for distribution a pocket
guide to "New York City for
the Handicapped." ' It con
tains 70 pages of information
on places to go and see
places without long flights of
stairs, or other types of archi
tectural barriers. The book
let tells of more than 230
restaurants, theaters, motion
picture houses, museums, art
galleries, concert halls, lib
raries, . department stores,
beauty salons, and bowling
alleys, . with an entrance
which will not keep out - a
handicapped person.
Dangerous Allergy io
Penicillin
In the April 20 number of
the JAMA, Dr. Walter B.
Shelley, of ' Philadelphia,
writes that some persons are
so extremely sensitive to
penicillin that even the in
jection of the tiny amount
needed for a skin-test can kill
them. Accordingly, a new
test has been devised which
can be carried out in a test-
tube, with a drop of the pa
tient's serum, some penicil
lin, and . some white blood
cells from a rabbit. This test
has been found to be accu
rate, and it can be used also
for synthetic penicillins, the
sulfa drugs, and local anes
thetics.
This is good news; and It
is to be hoped that soon no
one will give penicillin to a
paticnt-and especially a pa
tient who has previously had
trouble with the drug, until
he has had this, test made
Probably soon, the people In

tories will be making It.
The person who has epi
lepsy may never have had a
typical seizure. Dr. Alvarez
outlines some interesting acts
about this often misunder

booklet called, "What Is Epi
lepsy?" You may get a copy
of it by sending 25 cents and
a self-addressed, stamped en
velope with your request for
it to Dr. Walter C. Alvercz.

country by the Department of
Commerce. The reports indi
cate that the male-female
ratio varies considerably from
region to region.
They show that the num
ber of single men and boys
in Jackson county over the
age of 14 amounts to 5,664,
while the number of single
women and girls in that age
bracket is only 3,813.
These figures do not include
men and women who have
been divorced or widowed.
High Ratio
The ratio of single men to
single women, 148 to 100, is
higher than it is in many
areas of the country. The av
erage is 124 to 100 in the
United States and, in Ore
gon 135 to 100.
The news that the county
is a good manhuntitig pre
serve seems to have gotten
around. The marriage rate
locally, after a temporary
lull, appears to be on the
rise. -
The figures show that 71.1
per cent of the men and wom
en of marriageable age in
Jackson county are now mar
ried. ...
That is quite a sizeable pro-
nnrtinn. Throughout the Unit
ed States as a whole, the
range is from 44 per cent to
more than 80 per cent..
Early Marriages
The trend toward early
marriages, which started
about 25 years ago, is now
in full swing. Teen-age mar
riages have become common
place, with nearly half the
girls taking their vows be
fore they are 20. The major
ity of them become brides f t
18.
For men, also, the average
age at first marriage keeps
dropping. It is now around
22.
In many cases, the young
newlyweds go on with their
education, aided by financial
assists from their parents.
Often, the bride quits school
and takes a job while her
spouse remains to get his di
ploma or college degree.
The report also notes the
number of Jackson county
residents who were formerly
married. Of the men, 864 are
listed as widowed and 1,240
divorced and, of the women,
2,879 widowed and 867 divorced.
