DUCTILE CAST IRON PIPE-City of Med
ford crows Thursday arc shown here un
loading a section of a new kind of water
pipe that has only become available on the
West Coast within the last year. By a
particular manufacturing process, the cast
iron pipe is treated so that it is virtually
flexible, while still maintaining nearly the
same tensile strength as ordinary steel.
Water Department Manager Robert Lee
ordered a carload of assorted sizes of the
pipe from a firm in Birmingham, Ala., at
a cost of $5,400. The cost of the pipe is
between 10 and 15 per cent higher than
regular pipe, but Lee said as the cost de
clines, the city will continue to purchase
more of it.

More People Using
Services, Books at
Public Library Here
More people are registered
for service and more people
are taking out books, Omar
Bacon, librarian for the Pub
lic Library of Medford and
Jackson County, announced in
making his annual report to
the library board.
The number of registered
borrowers has increased by
1,444 during the year ending
June 30, 1963, Bacon said.
The home use of books in
creased by 16,263 or close to
5 per cent. The number of
volumes added to the library
increased by 10,183 after
worn, obsolete, or discarded
books were removed. Re
quests for books from the
branch libraries Increased by
1,605 or 6B.7 per cent.
Reviewing events of the
year, the librarian said the
highlight was the receipt of a
Book-of-lhe-Month club award
during National Library
Week. The current programs
of centralized book purchas
ing and cataloging, exchange
of books and other close co
operative efforts, he stressed,
were basic to receiving the
award.
New Sorvices Start
New services initiated dur
ing the year included a pro
gram of exchanging books
among the Ashland and Jose
phine county libraries and the
Public Library of Medford
and Jackson County. This ex
change was designed to bring
patrons belter service with
less cost. Olher new services
were listed by Bacon as the
purchase of Moody's Investors
Service and the indexes for
biography, business and edu
cation. .
Listed as physical improve
ments at the library were a
new roof installed on the Car
negle half of the headquarters
library and painting of the
ceilings to improve the light
ing, an improvement deferred
from 1961-62.
Several valley cities im
proved the facillliej at their
branch libraries during the
year. Gold Hill, Phoenix,
Jacksonville, Prospect, Butte
Falls, Shady Cove, Table Rock
and Central Point all "made
significant expansion or Im
provement," Bacon said.
Higher Performance
In the problem area, the
librarian placed the demands
for higher performance by
students, who have flocked to
the' library Jn an effort to
'achieve this higher perform
ance. The result is felt in the
calls from the branch libraries
to the headquarters library
and in the Increased number
using reading room facilities.
The library has employed
teacher-assistants for evenings
to better serve students and
"keep the educational atmos
phere" present in the reading
rooms.
Bacon said he anticipated
further cooperative efforts be
tween the schools and the
public library In bring belter
service to students without re
ducing the public library's re
sponsibility to adults.
"The past year's progress
has been the product of the
auiiuii tinu i r in wui k Ul
many In the library and in
the community." Bacon con
cluded his report. "The in
creased support of county and
city has been fundamental
to the year's success."
