WORK SMARTER
NOT HARDER
By BERNICE STRAWN
Oregon State University
Homemakers inclined to
doubt your contribution to so
ciety, take note. A recent ar
ticle in the New York Times
was headlined "Housewives
System Aiding Industry."
This system is simply the
way you get a meal. Because
baked potatoes take time, you
start them, then the meat and
a quick-cooking frozen vege
table last. All end up on the
table at the same time.
But industries like missile
makers call the system "Pro
gram Evaluation and Review
Technique" or PERT for
short.
The newspaper article
points out that you mentally
stagger your jobs according
to time needed. A complicated
industry must use charts to
show time required for each
task so the whole job is fin
ished on schedule.
Homemaking gets more
complicated every day. May
be PERT chart is what you
need to get more done. By
the way, we're told this word
is likely to get common us
age. Don't be surprised
your neigbhor says she
"perting" her housework.
A barbecue is an easy way
to entertain a big crowd. Here
are some ideas, suggested by
OSU Nutritionist Virginia
Weiser to make the job go
smoothly:
Plan for one-way traffic
and have several lines, mark
ed off by ropes if possible, if
the crowd is very large.
The worst bottleneck is us
ually the beverage serving
area. Have separate helpers
serve coffee or cold drinks.
Speed up the line by offering
cubed instead of granulated
sugar.
Relishes should be on eat
ing tables, not on the serving
line.
Assign each helper a def
inite job and have two "float
ers" for emergencies.
For more ideas write to me
at OSU for our Extension
Service bulletin, "Outdoor
Cookery for the Family." It's
free.

to kidskin, brillance to patent,
an importance to matte finishes.

Mother Should
Prepare Breakfast,
Researchers Advise
University Park, Pa. -Drill's
worth the effort to see
that your family gets a good
breakfast and it's also Im
portant that it is prepared by
one person, say researchers
at Penn State university.
A good breakfast provides
a better nutritional balance
for the day, eliminating the
11 o'clock slump.
Tests have proved that
breakfa.it Is better nutrition
ally when one person pre
pares it.
That's because the person
who hn.t the responsibility is
more likely to provide a bal
anced meal for the group.
An individual preparing his
own breakfast may rail it
quits after toast and coffee.
