On Decision
New York - IUPII - Veteran
middleweight George Benton
gave away just about every
thing but experience to
younger, heavier Allen
Thomas Saturday night, but
that was enough to gain him
a unanimous 10-round deci
sion in their nationally tele
vised bout at Madison Square
Garden.
Benton, fifth ranked in the
middleweight devision, came
into the ring a slight favorite
and made the odds look good
as he boxed and counter
punched his way to victory.
At 30, he was giving away
eight years to Thomas, 10th
ranking light heavyweight
from Chicago, who had lost
only once before last night
and was carrying a 19-bout
unbeaten string. Thomas, un
der contract to make 165
pounds for this bout, actually
weighed 164 V4 to Benton's
162.
Referee Mark Conn called
Benton a 6-4 winner, while
Judges Frank Forbes and Joe
Armstrong had the Philadcl
phian ahead, 6-3-1, and 8-2,
respectively.
