    'Football's
Finest Hour'
To Be Held
Portland-Neither team will
have a decided weight advan
tage in the annual Shriners'
hospital all-star football game
Aug. 17 in Multnomah sta
dium. A cheek of the 27-man
rosters of the State and Metro
teams showed that the Metro
backfield will average 173
pounds against 174 for the
Staters. Up front the Metros
will have a 2-pound edge -196
pounds to 194.
The game often called
"football's finest hour"
brings together outstanding
senior high school players of
last year on a State versus
Metropolitan basis.
Although there will be no
advantage in the heft depart
ment, State does figure to
have an edge in the fact that
Head Coach Fred Spiegelberg
will have his quarterback
from last year's championship
Medford team, Dan Miles.
M 1 1 e s' familiarity with
Spiegelberg's style of play is
considered by most coaches to
be a "real plus" for the Stat
ers since Spiegelberg won't
have to "break in" a signal
caller. Bob Hull of Jefferson
in Portland, will not have his
own quarterback .
Hull's choices for the im
portant quarterback position
are from different schools,
and he will have to acquaint
them with his style of play.
Spiegelberg, probably the
state's most successful high
school coach, has not enjoyed
loo much success in the role
of an all-star mentor, but the
word is out that he plans to
bend every effort this year to
turn up with a winner.
State hasn't been in the
winner's column since 1956
when they scored a narrow 7
to 6 victory. The closest they
came to a win was in 1961
when the teams ended in a
19 to 19 deadlock.
The two squads will report
here Aug. 4 for 2 weeks of in
tensive practice.
Tickets for the contest are
now on sale by mail from
Shrine game headquarters at
1119 S.W. Park ave. Reserved
seats are $3 and $2. On Aug.
5 they will go on sale at J. K.
Gills in downtown Portland
and at Stevens & Sons jewel
ers in Portland (Lloyd Center)
and Salem.
CLAY GETS OFFER

weight contender, has been
offered $30,000 to meet Doug

Garden earlier this year.

Jalop
At Speedway Track
Sunday Afternoon
Jalopies of every make and
model are entered in this af
ternoon's auto races at the
Medford Speedway oval track
in White City. With a maxi
mum value of S100 set on the
entries, the public is in for
an afternoon of fender
crunching slam-bang racing.
The last Jalopy derby, held
two weeks ago, provided
many exciting moments and
race officials say today's
events will be bigger and bet
ter. Those who saw the last
race will remember that only
nine cars out of a field of
twenty-one finished the main
event. Several times there
were pile-ups involving up to
10 cars that brought the
crowd to its feet.
Today's races will feature
more cars and better weather
will provide a faster track.
Some drivers gained exper
ience from the last race and
there are a host of new cars
and drivers registered for to
day's action.
A field of from 40 lo 50 ma
chines is expected to be in
competition for this second
race of the season.
Every driver will have his
own fan club in the stands to
cheer him on toward victory.
Those who earn the right to
enter the winner's circle will
do so only after proving their
driving skill, the dependabil
ity of their 'jalopy', and a lit
tle "luck," in most instances.
Win, lose, or draw, the ma
jority of the drivers have a
good time in their adventures
on the track.
Spectator gates are ' slated
to open at noon. Drivers may
use the-track after 10 a.m. for
practice. Time trials are
scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
followed by the races at 2 p.m.
Officials expect to have all
events completed by 4 p.m.
The races today will be
longer in length than those of
two weeks ago. Heat races
will be 10 laps in length, the
semi-main will go for 15 times
around the track and the main
event is slated to be a 25 lap
affair. The trophy dash will
remain at four laps.
Trophies will be presented
lo first place winners in all
events and merchandise
awards are made possible by
Medford area merchants.
Jalopies representing Ash
land, Medford. Talent,
Phoenix, Eagle Point, Gold
