i Klamath Falis-The Klamath

last night 4-0 in an Area 4

The two teams were pitted
against each other last week
when the Medford team tied
the Falcon record of 10-2 for
the season games.
- Klamath gained ground on
the double plays against Med
ford. . The first out of the game
occurred when John Gray
doubled and then went to
third on an error.
Klamath's John Gray scored
the first run in the third in
ning when he came across' off
the bat of Gary Benson. Jn
the fourth inning, Mike Kitch
lng singled for the Falcons
and ran across home plate on
a sacrifice fly by Jay Paxton.
The third run was made for
the Falcons when Gary Ben
son tripled and then scored on

Falcon third baseman. Ron
Edmonds reached third in the
same inning with Mike Barnes
on second when Enyart
grounded out to first for an
other double play by the

Portland Thumps
Tacoma By 17-5
By DAVE ROWE
UPI SporU Writer
AI Lary, one of the pitch
ing brothers who hasn't been
too much in the limelight,
apparently is anxious to move
up to the major leagues and
his recent mound perfor
mances make the trip seem
possible soon.
The 33-year-old Salt Lake
City right-hander turned in
a neat three-hit package
Thursday night in defeating
Seattle 1-0. All of the hits
were singles and it marked
Lary's ninth victory against
seven losses.
It was the second consecu
tive air-tight outing for Lary,
who gave up but five hits
July; 14 in downing Portland
6-3.
Another former major
leaguer, Ted Wills, pitched
and batted himself to a four-
hit 3-0 shutout over the Okla
homa City 89's. The south
paw drove in shortstop Tom
my Helms with the first run
in the third inning and that
proved enough.
The Padres added insur
ance and allies in the sixth :
and eight innings. First base-1
man Rogelio Alvarez banged !
a homerun with none on in
the eighth.
Wills struck out 10 and
walked two, facing only 34
men.
Seattle came back in the
nightcap to win 1-0 with Dave
Busby, rookie right-hander
tossing the victory. He just
reported from the eastern
league. He hurled six hit ball,
striking out four and walk
ing one. The Rainiers got their
tally off Wayne Carlander on
a walk, a sacrifice and a
single by Felix Maldonado.
In other games, Portland
slaughtered Tacoma 17-5, and
Spokane took a pair from
Dallas-Fl. Worth 5-2 and 4-3.
The Beaver-Giant game was
close until the sixth when
Portland scored three runs on
Bill Brayn's homerun with
two aboard. The Beavers ad
ded three In the seventh and
seven in the eighth frames to
give Bob Flynn his sixth vic
tory in nine decisions. The
loser, Bob Garibaldi, now has
a record of 8-8.
The Indians won their 60th
and 61st games of the cam
paign as Phil Ortega and
Howie Reed turned in pitch
ing: gems. Ortega won the
first game on a five-hitter,
striking out 12. Spokane was
the visiting team in that one
as the game was a makeup of
one rained out earlier in Tex
as. George Bamberger was the
loser and he was touched for
a two run homer by Mike
Brumley. Ortega's record now
is 6-6 and Bamberger's 7-9.
In the nightcap Reed reg
istered his 11th victory
against six losses. He gave up
seven hits while Bob Baillar-
geon was touched for 13 by i
the Indians.
Spokane, taking a page
from the parent Los Angeles I
Dodgers, has won 19 of 23
games in July and 13 of 15
at home.
The double loss dropped
Dallas-Fl. Worth two games
behind Oklahoma City in the
Southern Division while Spo
kane pulled 5'2 games ahead
of second place Tacoma in
the Northern loop,
