; The war on this game of

times called "weasel word

According to Kenneth L.
Calkins of the Boeing public

Can't See Panel
This translates "he can't
see the instrument panel."
Calkins said that about a
year ago STL project man
ager Ivar M. Holliday look
ed over some Boeing and STL
reports and correspondence
on the Minuteman program
and-although he is quite fa
miliar with the missile-he
couldn't decipher some of
them.
Holliday decided that what
was needed was some quality
control of the hundreds of
pages written about the Min
uteman.
Partially as a result of Cal
kins' and Holliday's efforts,
Boeing and STL employees
have attended classes aimed
at lifting the fog from their
writing.
Calkins believes that unex
plained, unfamiliar abbrevia
tions have no place in a field
that already is highly com
plex. In a top story in an Air
Force command newspaper he
counted 60 unexplained ab
breviations
Typical Air Force writing
leans heavily to the use of
u n e x p 1 ained abbreviations,
but Calkins said Air Force
manual 10-4 reads, "the space
saved by using abbreviations
does not begin to compensate
for the loss of clarity that may
result.
Need An Aid
Calkins said he knows of
one Boeing employee who col
lected source material to help
cope with the abbreviation
problem, including a sheet en
titled "AF (Air Force) abbre
viations used on the Bomarc
program."
"lt is the kind of non-writ-ing
that pushes the cost of
correspondence up to S20 a
memo," Calkins said.
He keeps battling away at
the use of four-bit words and
"circumlocution," which he
defines as "saying nothing in
23 additional words or more.
One of the ways he docs
this is to ask Boeing employ
ees if they ever heard of Wil
liam Gibbs. Usually they
haven t. Gibhs laid the fouiv
dution ot physical chemistry
that led to the present de
velopment ot tile plasties,
rubber and steel industries.
Gibbs set down his Ideas in
a paper called "On The Equi
librium of Heterogeneous Sub
stances." It was almost easier
to rediscover the principles
of physical chemistry than it
was to read the paper.
Cumins said Gibbs came
within a whisker of kceplns;
all that knowledge to himself,
