Fresno Posse
Uses Helicopter
Fresno, Calil. - OIPD - When
the Fresno county sheriff
sends a posse up in the moun
tains, the deputies don't sad
dle up. They gas up.
Fresno is the home of the
nation's first sheriff's heli
copter rescue squadron; a 14
craft fleet manned by vol
unteer pilots and mechanics.
Each has been deputized by
Sheriff - Coroner Melvin A.
Willmirth.
Within two weeks after its
recent formation, the squad
ron conducted two successful
life saving missions in the
Sierra Nevara.
The first involved rescu
ing the pilot and two passen
gers of a light airplane which
crashed at 8,600 feet altitude.
On another mission, a mem
ber of the squadron flew in
sulin to a camper high in the
Sierra.
The Hiller helicopters are
owned by five commercial
helicopter operating firms,
and the pilots and mechanich
are employees of the firms.
MORE TRAINING
Montreal - WPD - It used to
take 100 hours to train a
mechanic in the electronics
system of the twin-engined
DC3. The four-engined Con
stellation required 200 hours.
Today, mechanics spend 1,500
hours in school before they
are qualified to work on jet
aircraft, according to the In
ternational Air Transport
Association.

The average pork producer
now gets seven pigs a litter,

If he could get 10 pigs per
