Medford Topples Klamath 5-0;
Prepares for Area Playoff
Medford American Legion
ball club won chance (or
the Area 4 Southern division
championship last night by
shutting out top seeded Kla
math Falls Falcons before a
crowd of some 650 fans at
the Jackson fairgrounds.
Previous to last night's
game, the Medford team had
stood in second place behind
the front running Falcons
with a win needed to bring
the two teams into a tie.
The skirmish last night
brought the Medford team the
win they needed to tie with
the Falcons for a 10-2 record
that would necessitate a play'
off for the area champion
ship.
It was decided by the flip
of a coin after the game to
hold the playoff at the Falcon
home grounds at Gems sta
dium In Klamath Falls, Thurs
day. July 18. Gametime is
slated for 8 p.m.
In the game last night,
Medford scored all the runs
in the first two innings of
play. Stu Young, going all
the way on the mound for
Medford, dealt the visiting Fal
cons eleven strike outs while
giving up two walks and al
lowing three hits.
Hurling for the Falcons
was Rich Jackson who struck
out five, walked six and gave
up seven hits. Jackson also
went the seven Innings.
Off to Bad Start
Klamath got off to a bad
start in the beginning of the
first inning when raps by Le
Voy Young and Larry Blnney
were caught by third base
man, Ron Edmonds for out
was also out following a two
base gainer by Lanny Guyer.
Medford took over in the
bottom half when Dan Miles
and Mike Neathamer crossed
over home plate to score the
first runs in the game. Miles
on a low fly deep into right
field, went around to second
while Neathamer took first
with a walk and both batters
stole a base on Jim Calhoun's
turn at bat. Calhoun struck
out, bringing up Tom Barker
who slugged a grounder into
the outfield, bringing in Miles
and Neathamer for two Med
ford points.
Klamath lost a chance to
hit in the opening minutes
of the second inning when
Young, on the mound for
Medford, pitched three con
secutive strike outs against
the Falcons.
Edmonds, on a grounder,
was put out at first base as
Klamath shortstop, LeVoy
Young pegged the first base
man in the bottom of the
second. Next up, Mike Barnes,
scored another point for Med
ford as he crossed home plate
on a single by Anderson. Fol
lowing behind Barnes on a
scored run was Young who
came around from second on
the same hit. Anderson, after
getting two runs batted in,
came over home base on an
error.
Klamath's attempts to load
the bases in the top of the
fourth inning put three men
on. Guyer, at first on an error
took second on a hit by Kitch
ing. Leading off for third on
pitch to Parlsotto, Uuyer
was caught by pitcher Young
fielder, Miles, who tagged out
Guyer. Kitching advanced to
second with a walk by Parl
sotto and was tagged out by
the second baseman as he
ran between second and third.
Paxton was struck out and
retired the Klamath side
Medford suffered difficul
ties in the bottom of the
fourth when Miles was hit on
the shoulder by a pitch. The
game was called momentarily
but Miles was able to take
first with one out already
in the bottom half. Jackson
for Klamath struck out the
next two Medford batters to
end the inning.
Struck Out
Young struck out three
more batters on the Klamath
team and brought up Tom
Barker who slugged a hard
grounder out to Guyer, who
