In addition to all the stops for gasoline, ice-cream cones,
and wrong turns resulting from navigational errors, he
also will be forced to a halt at roadside souvenir stands
and sit in the hot sun while the little woman trots eagerly
among the birdbaths and baskets.
It beats me why you can buy all kinds of blankets made
by the Navajos in New Mexico at all the Btands in Minne
sota and why the side-road Seminoles in Florida feature
beaded belts made by the Indians in Minnesota.
The Italians turn out beautiful little figurines of Scottish
Highlanders, and Paris perfume is a best seller in the
British West Indies. In Paris you" buy Highland heather.
So I suppose it's natural that almost any American
souvenir shop features native art which was actually made
by the head-hunters of Kenya. You know the usual assort
ment There are hand-tooled leather bags, plaster peasants
leading donkeys, little brown jugs labeled "Welcome to
Bide-A-Wee," and genuine synthetic earrings that reach
your shins. -
But the shops are irresistible all the same. I clamber
out at every "antique" shop to fondle the imitation cran
berry glass ($47.50 at half price) or wander through the
Side o' Shore Shop mooning over goatskin laundry bags.
This has caused the rest of my family to miss the last
ferryboat to the mainland, the last units at the motel, and
the last chance at dinner before the cover charge.
On my latest expedition I found a quaint little mountain
hideaway which dealt in primitive art All its creations
were the products of hillbilly artisans, weaving and carv
ing by the light of the moon and turning out delicate
specimens of bird cages and wastebasketa between stints
at the still. Or so I was told.
I couldn't decide whether to buy the lopsided hamper,
so rustic for the bathroom, or the wicker serving tray for
those casual evenings by the pool I don't have. Finally,
I decided on a reed basket a real conversation piece to
impress the stay-at-homes.
Only after I was back being one myself did I find the
label inside.
It read : Made in Hong Kong.
