of La Jolla, Calif., at 67, re
covered his putting touch on
the last 10 holes to shoot a
second-round 35-34-69 for
two-day total of 136 strokes
Booming Drives
Nicklaus, the 23 -year -old
U.S. Masters champion who
carded an opening-round 71
combined booming drives
with accurate approach shots
for a 31-36 round that gave
him a 36-hole total of 138.
He shot four birdies and one
bogey and required only 28
putts.
Rodgers, who shot an open
ing - round 67 Monday, and
Arnold Palmer, the tourna
ment favorite who had a dis
astrous 76, teed off nearly
four hours after Nicklaus.
Warm sunshine and a mild
breeze greeted the second day
of the 72-hole tournament on
the 6,757-yard, par 70 Royal
Lytham and St. Anne's course.
Missed Putt
Nicklaus shaved three
strokes off par as he went out
in 31. He carded a birdie and
a bogey on the incoming nine
for a 38. Coupled with Mon
day's 71, this gave him a 36
hoie total of 138 strokes.
His lone bogey came on the
356-yard 16th hole, where he
drove into the rough, hit his

Events for boys six to 14
years of age and girls six to

to 12:30 a.m. Competition for
older boys is billed for 5:30
to ,8 p.m.
There will be boys' and
oirls' events In 10 and under,
11-12 and 13-14 age divisions
and girls' contests in 15-16
age class. Evening events for
boys will be in 15-10, high
school and open ago groups.
Youngsters 10 and under
will be divided further by
age if there are sufficient
numbers of contestants.

There will be a 150-yard
run for boys and girls 6-12
and a 175 for boys 6-16 and
all girls' divisions. Other
events include the 100 dash
for nigli school and open
boys, the 220 for boys and
girls 13 and up, the 440 for
boys 16 and up , the 880 for
boys 13 and up, the three
fourth mile for 15-16 boys,
the mile for high school and
open classes.
Other events will be avail
able on demand. Dean Ben
son, Medford high track
conch, who is In charge of
the meets, said that an 880
may be held for boys 10-11.
This event was run at the
Tuesday workout. Benson re
ported that, surprisingly, it
was found that the younger
boys could run this race and
do It pretty well.
Bob Mclntyre, Stanford uni
versity varsity runner, is as
sisting Benson with the super
vision of the track program.
Other meets are slated for
July 20, July 27 and Aug. 10,

divisions of the Pacific Coast
league are as different as day
and night.
The Northern division is a
two team race with heavy
odds on Spokane winning the
bundle. But, In the Southern
division, four of the five clubs
are battling for the top spot.

The victory ended a three

Fanned Four in Row
Tri-City had two on base
with no one out in the second
Inning, the bases filled with
two out in the third inning
and two on with one out in
the fourth. Gem batters were
retired three up and three
down in the first, fifth, sixth
and seventh innings. Corliss
struck out the last four batters
he faced.
Starting TC pitcher Dennis
Barry was charged with four
of the Studs' 11 hits and with
seven of the runs. He walked
one. Dave Hill yielded the
seven other hits and 10 runs,
walking five, striking out four
nd hitting a batter. Corliss
also hit one batter.
Dale Kurtz doubled for the
Gems and David Ganger got
the other TC hit. The Studs
had one double play.
Central Point first baseman
Howard Tomlinson suffered a
painful ankle injury when he
attempted to reach third base
on an overthrow of second in
the third inning. He was out
on the play.
The 1963 season concludes
for the Studs on Sunday after
noon when they are guests of
the Medford team in a 1:30
p.m. game at the county fair
grounds ball park at Medford.
