    Pre-Fair Starts In Ashland Today
The second in a series of 4-H
pre-fairs was scheduled to get
under way this morning at the
Bellview Grange hall in Ash
land. The Phoenix - Talent pre
fair, the first, was held earlier
this week.
The Antelope pre-fair will
be held July 24. starting at
9:30 a.m. at the Elbert Bifiham
ranch on Bigham rd. in the
White City area. Hogs and
sheep classes will be held first
followed by judging and dairy
and beef classes will be held
in the afternoon.
The Applegate Ruch pi-
fair will be held July 2b. start
ing at 9:30 a.m. in the Ruch
school. . i
The Westside-Central Point
pre-fair wil be held July 27 on
the J a c k s o n- county . fair
grounds starting at 9. a.m. ;

Midwest Areas Request Drought Disaster Ratings

A worsening drought
threatened to reach disaster
proportions throughout parts
of the Midwest today, cutting
the wheat yield and posing a
threat to the fall crops.
. A U.S. Department of Ag
riculture disaster committee
was to meet in Washington
today to consider Gov. John
Reynolds' request to declare
20 Wisconsin counties drought,
disaster areas.
In the Oklahoma Panhan
dle a request was made for a
drough designation, but Gov.
Henry Bellmon rejected It,
saying dry weather was one
of the hazards of farming.
Some areas of southwestern
Kansas have been declared
drought stricken. The wheat
crop suffered consider able
damage In western' Kansas,
although farmers said they
got a better, yield than they
expected. 1
In southwest: Iowa and
northwest Missouri farmers
decided to reactivate a cloud
seeding program they said
was highly successful in 1937.
They said- they; were eight:
inches deficient In rainfall for
