MEDFORD MAIL. TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON
WEDNESDAY. JULY 10. 1963
Medford American T.ecinn
junior baseball nine broke its
1963 season jinx against
grants rass here last night
With Jim Calhoun getting
three hits and driving in three
runs and with newcomer
Jack Adams pitching four-hit,
12-strikeout ball, the Med
fords laced the Mock Ford
team 10 to 3 at the fair
grounds ball park in a non
league engagement.
It was the first win for
Medford in four games this
season with GP. And, the two
clubs are not done with each
other. They collide again at
the fairgrounds at 8 p.m. on
Thursday. This time it will
be an Area 4 Southern di
vision ruckirs.
Medford never trailed last
night. The home club scored
three times in the first inning
and once in the second for a
4 to 0 lead. Grants Pass rallied
for all of its markers in the
third canto but Medford pull
ed away with runs in the
fourth, fifth and sixth frames.
Nine Straikht Strikeouts
Adams, resident of the Los
Angeles area and spending
the summer at Phoenix, made
his first appearance with the
Medfords last night. He ran
into rough going in the third
inning when he walked four
batters and gave up two hits.
But, Coach Cliff McLean
stuck with him and Adams
caught stride to hold down
the Mocks the rest of the way.
Adams, a lefthander, struck
out the last nine batters he
faced. He issued no walks out
side the third inning.
Medford got its first inning
scores on just one hit, a single
by Calhoun. Figuring also
were two bases on balls, a
wild pitch, a passed ball,
three stolen bases, an error
and a fielder's option. Dan
Miles drew the first walk, ad
vanced on the bad pitch and
passed ball.
Mike Neathamer walked
and a double swipe scored
Miles. Neathamer then pil
fered third base and Calhoun
drove him home. Calhoun
was forced at second by Tom
Barker. A fielder's choice rap
by Ken Phipps and an error
allowed Barker to score.
Adams Doubles
Bill Enyart was hit by a
pitch in the second inning
and doubled home by Adams.
Three of the bases on balls,
hits by Pete Hardin and Bill
Standley and a fielder's choice
swat by Don Summers were
the run makers for GP.
Medford scored three times
in the fourth inning on three
walks and singles by Dan
Miles and Calhoun. Three
more walks, a hit batter, two
wild pitches and an error
gained two runs in the fifth
canto. In the sixth a counter
tallied on a Calhoun hit, an
error, a walk, steals by Cal
houn and Jim Brennan and a
Phipps groundout.
Rich Wolney had two hits
for GP, one a double.
George Sturza, new Grants
Pass resident from Albany,
Calif., gave up seven of the
Medford runs on four hits. He
walked five, hit one and
fanned three. Reliever Steve
Newman yielded one hit, three
runs and three walks. He hit
a batter and struck out one.
