Soldier in Berlin Faces Court Trial
Berlin - (UPD - An American
Army spokesman said today a
military policeman who shot
out four search lights mount
ed by the Communists to catch
refugees will be tried by
court-martial.
He said the non-commissioned
officer had been drink
ing when the incident occur
red at the tiny enclave of
Stcinstuecken last Wednes
day. The name of the soldier was
not disclosed immediately.
The United States dismissed
as propaganda Com munist
charges - apparently based
on the same incident - that
American troops fired on East
German border guards. Put
the Army considered the ser
geant's act "a serious breach
of discipline," the U.S. spokes
man said.
In another incident, a 20-year-old
East Berliner dodged
20 machine pistol shots by
Communist border guards to
escape to the French sector of
West Berlin through a rail
way freight yard. Two East
German guards chased the
refugee 50 yards into West
Berlin but were turned back

Hospital Escapee Hides in Vent
Atascadcro, Calif. (DPP An
Inmate at Atascadcro State
hospital hid out In an air vent
for nearly a month before
being discovered, authorities
sflld In a belated report.
Hospital spokesmen said
Monday that Robert J.
Thompson. 31, was found Fri
day after disappearing June 8
Thompson had lived in the
vent located above garbage
cans in the institution' steam
room and foraged for food at
night.
Authorities said that it
would have been Impossible
for Thompson to escape
through the vent because its
outside opening was covered
with a heavy reinforced steel
grill.
They said that the shaft was
ftva feet by five feet and sub
jected daily to blasts of steam
"It must have been an awful
warm and moist kind of cl!
mate to live In," said a spokes
man. "But he's just a 31-year
old kid and he likes hide-end
seek games."
Funds for Study
Of Toads' Calls
Irks Congressman
Washington - OIPII - The Na
tional Science Foundation and
Republican Rop. Richard L.
Roudebush clashed today over
the importance of mating calls
of Central American toads.
The Indiana congressman
started the debate with a let
ter to voters in his home dis
trict. He attacked what ho con
siders last-minute scrambling
by government agencies to
spend their remaining funds
before the end of the fiscal
year.
Roudebush singled out lor
criticism four programs
awarded NSF funds shortly
before June 30. end of the fis
cal year, including a $21,200
grant to study toads in Cen
tral America.
He said the NSF should
"leave the intricacies of why
toads respond to toad.s up to
the toads, themselves."
Important Information
The NSF came back with
claim that the toad study not
only would provide important
Information on man's evolu
tion, but could result In im
portant benefits for modern
medicine.
Also labeled by Roudebush
as of dubious worth was 1
$2,911 grant to study fern
flora of Peru.
Other expeditures termed
"Interesting" by the congress
man were:
-$103,000 for films of Eskl
mo culture.
-$5,700 for a study of the
diving behavior of the seal.
Roudebush said it was typi
cal that the U.S. government -faced
with an $8 billion defklt
from fiscal 1963 - still would
spend more than $21,000 to
study mating calls of toads.
