In Crash of Plane
Oak Harbor, Wash. - (UPO -One
man was killed and two
parachuted to safety Friday
when their A3B Skywarrior
bomber crashed in the West
ern Pacific 50 miles north of
Naha, Okinawa, the Whidbey
Island Naval Air Station here
reported Saturday.
Killed was Parachute Rig
ger 1st Class Carlyle Hatlet,
Cupeville, Wash.
Surviving the crash were
Lt. John T. Glanville, Oak
Harbor, Wash., the pilot, and
Lt. (Jg) G. L. Smith, Aurora,
111., bombardier-navigator.
The bomber was attached
to Heavy Attack Squadron 10
Station at Whidbey Island and
was flying from the aircraft
carrier USS Constellation at
the time of the crash.

oner's office said the victim
was Conrad Deines, 59, Port

The small Swedish sedan turn
ed left and into a "fatal" acci
dent - but all that happened
was a squeal of brakes and
the voice of a policeman over
the loudspeaker telling its
driver he had goofed.
The ncar-accldcnt and guid
ing voice are found every
week end here as Swedish
drivers practice switching
their driving habits from the
left to the right side of the
road In a huge, mock village
driving school.
Swedes have driven vehic
les on the left for almost 200
years. But they have decided
to Join the rest of the conti
nent on the right in 1067.
Local motoring clubs and
the Malmo newspaper Kvall
sposten set up the mock vil
iHgc to mitKe the switch as
smoothly ns possible In the
next three years.
The village, Jammed every
week end with hundreds of
private cars, resembles Times
Squnre or Plcadllly at the
rush hour, only blcger, with
hundreds of signs and lights
guiding the harried drivers on
their unfamiliar way.
All left side driving is for
bidden. Tho speed is held to
a maximum of 25 miles an
hour.
Police, working from a cen
tral control tower, broadcast
advice, compliments and an
occasional scalding correction
to a failing driver.
Although the Swedes have
driven on the left for so long,
their cars have steering
wheels set for the new right
lane driving - steering on the
left as in the United States
or Europe.
