Here's One Case Where a
Forceful Change Succeeded
There was vocal conflict
aggravated frequently by the
appearance o I commercial
fishermen with nets in the
near vicinity of sports fisher
men who screamed loud and
long that, there ought to be a
law making it illegal for nets
to be used in areas where fish
ermen with rods and lines
normally congregated.
As time went on, the argu
mcnts grew more heated.
There were probably several
reasons why fishing wasn't as
productive as could be hoped,
but the failure was attributed
to the net fishermen.
Then came the day when
the net fishermen stretched
their seines across the mouth
of the bay. This was th e
clincher. The balloon went up.
The sports fishermen blew
their collective tops. They dc
termincd to do something
about it. Pressure was brought
to bear and meetings were
called. Tempers flared.
On one side the nctlcrs,
many of whom had fished the
waters for many years eking
a livelihood from the sea
They could see no reason why
anyone should dictate to them
whore they could drop their
nets.
Only Bitterneis
Interviews from both sides
yielded only bitterness; all ar
guments were hashed and re
hashed, times without num
ber. The wheels of final deci
sion ground ponderously, but
they turned. It was decided-
no net fishing within certain
defined boundaries. "Unlaw
ful to block all, or part of any
inlets leading into the bay."
The sports fishermen were
happy; the net fishermen were
angry; the ncttcrs naci their
day, illuminated by the glar
ing light of publicity.
The headlines forecasted
dire results. The net fishermen
screamed; "We will starve.
Our children will be deprived
of their birthright. Our way
of life has been destroyed. We
will be out of work; it was the
only way we had of making a
living."
These, and many other
equally startling statements
were printed. There were
some folks, aside from those
directly concerned, that be
lieved all this, and their hearts
ached for those unfortunate
victims whose livelihoods
were being interferrcd with,
and who would now starve.
This all actually happened
Just a few short years ago. In
the meantime there has been
ample time to analyze the de
cision, the result, and measure
the damage, or the advant
ages. No Evidence
Without food, a healthy man
can live for about 30 days. The
records show that not a single
one of the dire forecasts of
what was expected to happen
to any of those concerned, has
occurred. Not a single person
has starved to death, in fact,
now at the end of 10 years, no
evidence can be found that
anyone even suffered from
even the mildest case of mal
nutrition. What seems a little stranger
is that all those that expected
to undergo a radical change In
living standards suffered little
or no inconvenience. Neither
was there any suffering; in
fact now, after Just a few
short years, there is a certain
degree of harmony between
the net fishermen and those
that use a hook and line,
Sometimes a forceful change
in a way of life proves bene
ficial.

HOT WEATHER CARE
The pet you save may be

Be sure to move the dog
house into the shade; It be
comes a place of torture if
exposed to the hot, mid-summer
sun. Be sure there is good
ventilation and that hard
cushion or cedar pillow be
provided for sleeping. Laun
dering of blankets, if used,
should be frequent. Only scru
pulous cleanliness will pre
vent an epidemic of fleas.
When you leave on vaca
tion, please do not forget your
pet. Remember always that he
depends upon you alone for
food and shelter. If you leave
him in a kennel be sure that
it is a reputable one. Many
dogs have been known to
contract disease germs from
kennels not disinfected after
each occupancy. If you are
leaving him with friends be
sure they understand his feed
ing schedule. Most certainly,
it is unadvisable to leave your
pet with anyone who is not
fond of animals.
Another cruelty, too often
practiced, is the adoption of
pets at vacation spots and
their eventual abandonment
when the family is ready to
go back home. So much suf
fering occurs as a result that
we ask all who come within
this category to be. sure to
turn these unwanted animals
over to an accredited shelter
or humanely put to sleep by
a veterinarian. Remember -hunger,
thirst and exposure
are the results of abandoning
animals under any circum
stances. Tips for summertime dog
care: Have your dog clipped,
if necessary, by a professional.
Brush out shedded hair from
long-haired dogs. Make plen
ty water available at all
times. Feed your dog smaller
amounts at more frequent in
tervals. Don't exercise your
dog immediately following a
meal. When In a car, provide
dog with ample ventilation.
Do not park in direct sun
light: make sure there is plen
ty of shade when parking for
any length of time.
