the report telephoned in by
Jack Cummings, caretaker,
who was awakened by the
arrival of numerous cars at
the scene. He saw youths
shedding their coats and
hanging them on the fences
preparatory to the settlement
of some feud in the old fash
ioned manner.
Several names were drop
ped as police appeared and
the crowd scattered but no
arrests were made.
Police were told that trou

Armory dance; The youths In
volved decided the dance was
not a good place , to : fight.
They agreed to meet at the
baseball "field.' Five of the
youths were from Eagle
Point, police were told, and
the others from Medford.

Crater Lake, viewed from
the rim, is a familiar sight to
many. Not so familiar is the
view from the lake itself,
looking up the steep rim. '.-
The shoreline cliffs, vary
ing from 500 to 2,000 feet
high, are of multicolored lava.
Continuing through Labor
Day, scenic boat trips are
available several times each
day and row boats are. avail
able for fishing. No fishing
license is required.
The boat landing may be
reached via the Cleetwood
trail, opened a few years ago.
It is 11 miles northwest of
Rim Village on the Rim drive.
The 1.1 -mile trail to the
water's edge is steep in
places.
Trip Encircles Lake
A 25-mile boat trip, which
encircles the lake, pauses at
scenic Wizard Island, a sym
metrical cinder cone 760 feet
high, and the Phantom Ship,
a mass of lava 169 feet high
resembling a ship under sail.
The trip takes 2'i hours
and a park naturalist is
aboard the 35-foot launch. The
boat's capacity is 30 persons.
The trips leave daily at 10
a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
During the trip, passengers
have a close look at the bril
liant blue of the water. Its
color is said to be caused
chiefly by the scattering of
sunlight in its clear depths,
the blue rays of the sunlight
being reflected from the wa
ter and rays of other colors
being absorbed.
Four trips each day take
passengers to Wizard Island
where a trail leads from the
shore to the crater, which is
about 90 feet deep and 300
feet in diameter. The launch
leaves at 8:30 and 11 a.m. and
2 and 3 p.m. - . .
The boats are stored during
the winter in two boat houses
on Wizard Island out of dang
er of avalanches.
The first boat built on
Wizard Island-was in 1914 or
1915, according to Ralph O.
Peyton, who is with the
Crater Lake Lodge company
and is one of the boat con
cession operators.
Boat Lost in Storm
This boat, Peyton explain
ed, was lost in a storm and is
somewhere" on the bottom
of the lake.
The Sparrow, a 35-foot In
board boat still in use, was
built on the island from parts
carried down the old trail. It
was constructed by Wilbur
Telford, Klamath Falls, in
mm, and has been main
tained through the years.
It is named for Alex .Spar
row, an early superintendent
01 Me park.
The other 35-foot Inboard
is named Min, in honor of
Mrs. Minnie Price, wife of
.the owner of Crater Lake
Lodge from 1921 to 1954.
Telford also built this boat,
but in Klamath Falls. It was
"launched over the side" of
the rim July 17, 1929, accord
ing to Peyton. ?
Plan To Lower Launch
The plan was to lower the
launch by rope and winch,
using a tree for snubbing. The
boat "got away" about 500
feet from the water and land
ed on the rocks below, smash
ing most of the planking, Pey-
lon snici.
Once repaired it was placed
into service and is still being
usea lonay.
The Fisher, n 17-foot in
board, was launched over the
side last year "uneventfully.
Peyton recalled, but it cost
$5,000 to get it in the water.
He added that the boats are
worth twice as much in the
water as on the rim.
The smaller boat was pur
chased irom the Tuna fleet In
San Diego and was built for
rough water, Peyton com
mented. It will carry 12 pas
sengers and is used on trips
to Wizard Island from Cleet
wood Cove where the dock is
located.
Named for Ranger
The boat is named for Don
usher, an early ranger at
L rater Lake who was instru
mental in having the Lava
Beds Notional monument cre
ated in California.
People taking the boat trips
win rci a ciosc iook at the
' Old Man of the Lake" - a
30-foot hemlock tree which
has floated around the lake
for a number of vears. The
tree floats vertically because
