here gives little Indication of
the complex organization
overseas which makes such
covers ce possible.
The American networks
have a small army of technl
cians and reporters traveling
with Mr. Kennedy. But the
focal point for CBS coverage,
for example, Is the London
Airport where executive pro
ducer Don Hewitt has set up
the CBS News switching cen
ter. From wherever the Presi
dent happens to be In West
Germany, Ireland, Italy or
England, the sound-picture
study Is fed across micro-wave
relay towers and over special
lines to Hewitt's position,
which has a complex of ma
chines, amplifying equipment
and monitors staffed by re
porters and editors, for broad
cast on the network. The
switching center la also capa
ble of transferring sound and
picture from film to video
tape.
The location of the center
has a double advantage. Once
the tape or film has been
edited and processed tor
broadcast, Hewitt can either
feed 1 Tclstar or Relay satel
lite pass, or place the tape
aboard a Jet courier plane en
route to New York if a satel
lite pass la unavailable.

Secret Service guard.
On the CBS monitors, he
ran watch tight close-ups of
the President as he is greeted
by officials and the people of
the various countries he vis
its. The powerful zoom lens
of the television camera Is
able to follow Mr. Kennedy
into the midst of the crowds
with far greater ease than
can the Secret Service men,
who often seem to be elbowed
aside.

Cruelty to animals begins
when you allow the birth of
litters of puppies and kittens
which you do not want.
Americans stand convicted
of cruelty to animals. You
may well ask how this Is pos
sible when American families
own 23 million dogs and 27
million cats. The c r u 1 1 y
comes from the tact that these
families permit their pets to
breed each year more than
25 million puppies and kittens
for which there Is no perma
nent home.
Most of these young ani
mals, unwanted by their own
ers and passed on to anyone
who will take them, are event
ually abandoned to a linger
ing death of starvation, dis
ease and exposure. The public
is hardly aware of this suffer
ing because there are not
great numbers of homeless
cats and dogs at any one time
In any one locality.
But as the agony of one
homeless animal is stilled by
death, another unwanted cat
or dog Is abandoned to re
place it, thereby continuing
the endless chain of misery.
And the cost is staggering:
ever -increasing millions of
dullars are spent each year
for dog-catching, animal shel
ters, and gas chainbcrs-yct
only a small fraction of the
homeless Is ever caught.
The plight of the homeless
animals is a symbol of human
Irresponsibility.
What can be dune about It?
You pet should be spayed to
avoid producing unwanted
litters. Spaying is simple sur
gery, performed by veterinar
ian with pel under anesthesia,
which renders female cats and
dogs sterile. Contrary to popu
lar myth, spaying docs nut
make an animal fat or lazy
and does not affect its person
ality or physical condition. Al
most all "Seeing-Eye" dogs
are spayed females.
There is a humane agency
called Friends of Animals, Inc.,
whose goal is a nation without
a single 'homeless cat or dog.
To achieve this goal Friends
of Animals, Inc., gives finan
cial help to those who cannot
afford prevailing tees fur the
spaying of mixed-breed cats
and dogs.
