Hiking Is Liked
In Tulip Land
Br MURRAY 3. BROWN
United Pr International
The American tourist who
enjoys strolling through the
countryside can find plenty o
company in the Netherlands.
For In that country on the
North sea, famed for its tulips.
windmills and dikes, hiking is
that many tourists join in for
time as baseball Is In the Unit
ed States.
Thousands of Dutch men,
women and children take part
in mass treks lasting up to six
days.
And each year, according to
the Netherlands National
Tourist office, the ranks are
swelled by more participants
from other countries around
the world, including the Unit
ed States.
Objective
Distance, not speed, is the
main objective in the Dutch
walks. The hikers try to cover
a specified distance each day
and stick it out to the end.
The Dutch say, however,
almost as much a national pas
a day or two to stretch their
legs and get a leisurely close
up look at the countryside and
the people. Spectators are wel
comed, too, and there are nu
merous inns and roadside res
taurants where they can sip
cool drinks while watching
the hike.
Also spaced along the route
of march are Red Cross sta
tions to treat blisters, corns
and bunions and other minor
ailments.
Most famous of the marches
is the Nijmegen "Vierdaagse"
July 23-26, now in its forty
seventh year. More than 15.
000 took part in the 1962
four-day hike.
Take Part
Anyone 12 years or older
can take part and it is not un
usual to see 80-year-old grand
mothers and grandfathers
stepping along with the
younger hikers. Marchers try
to cover a specified distance
within a time limit of usually
11 hours. Young men aim for
34 miles a day; older men and
women try for 25 miles and
'the very young and the very
old shoot for 18 miles.
Each day the hikers leave
Nijmegen and return at night.
But each day they take a dif
ferent route. On the final day,
spectators line the roads to
shower flowers on the hardy
ones who have stuck it out the
four days and earned prize
commemorative ribbons.
Another four day march,
also from July 23-26, is held
at Apeldoorn. Here hikers are
separated by ages into three
classes and cover different
distances: 30 miles per day for
men 21-50; 24 miles for youths
17-20, women 17-50 and men
51-70; and 18 miles for boys
and girls 15-16, women 51-70,
and men 71-75.
Croups Leave
Each group leaves at a dif
ferent time each morning. The
route leads through the town
of Apeldoorn, often called the
"largest garden city in the

Netherlands," and winds
through the picturesque
woods and countryside dotted
with 12th century churches
and castle or two. There is a
big festival at the conclusion
of the four-day event.
Newest and toughest of the
marches is the Hook of Hol
land to Den Helder trek, a
distance of about 90 miles,
from July 29 to August 3. The
hikers camp out during the
march along the beaches with
the sea on the left and the
dunes on the right. The route
passes the biggest locks in the
world at Ijmuiden. To make
it easier on the hikers, auto
mobiles carry their equipment
to the overnight camping sites.
Last but not least is the
"Airborne March," commemo
rating the Allied paratroop
landings at Arnheim in Sep
tember, 1944. A one-day
march held on Sept. 14, hikers
follow the route of the troops
from Arnheim through the
woods of the Veluwe zone and
across the battlefields of
World War II. Distances range
from six to nine miles for
children 10-13 to 21 miles for
anyone 14 years and older.
