day, posed threats of forest
fires and caused water short
ages in many communities.
Night rains provided some
relief across northern Illinois
and Wisconsin but tempera
tures were expected to climb
high into the 90s for the fifth
consecutive day.
Heat exhaustion and the
lure of the ol' swimming hole
claimed many lives. Roads
and highways buckled in the
record heat and some towns
banned lawn sprinkling.
Heat Record Broken
The temperature rose to 87
degrees Thursday at Phil
delphia, setting a record for
the date. A 83-degree reading
in Pittsburgh matched the
record and Buffalo, N.Y., tied
68-year-old record with a
high of 88 degrees.
The mayor of Erie, Pa., de
clared a state of emergency
because of a shortage In the
city water supply.

Girls Drown
Two girls drowned In a
farm pond near Butler, Pa.,

A brush fire scorched 640
acres in the Gloucester-Rock
port, Mass., area and the
Main Forest Service said the
fire danger had risen In vir
tually all of the state.

Thant Asks Probe
Of Call-Girl Report

he has asked UN officials to
investigate charges that a call
girl ring is operating Inside
the headquarters of the world
body.
The charges have been made
in New York newspapers over
the past three weeks. A wom
an accredited here as a tem
porary press correspondent
was chargd in a city court
Thursday with prostitution.
Thant told a press confer
ence today he had asked the
relevant UN authorities to
conduct an investigation into
the situation and expects a
report today. He declined fur
ther comment until this re
port has been delivered.
He said he did not think the
FBI had been Involved in in
vestigations, inside the UN it-solf-whlch
is technically non
American territory.
Youth, 19, Drowns

pool here Thursday.
Wenholtz was a lite guard
at the pool and was helping
prepare It for a swim meet
scheduled later.
There were no swimmers In
the pool at the time. Authori
ties said there was no Imme
diate explanation for the ac
cident and an Investigation
was under way.
