. Portland - UTt - The Inter
national Woodworkers of
America met today with rep
resentatives of the Big Six
employer group under feder
al mediation auspices.
It was the first meeting be
tween the two sides involved
in the Northwest lumber
strike shutdown since it be
gan June 5.
The Federal Mediation
Service called it an "explora
tory" session and said the em
ployer group would meet
Monday with the other big
lumber union, Lumber and
Sawmill Workers.
About 19,000 workers have
been idled in three states
since the two unions struck
St. Regis Paper Co. and U.S.
Plywood and four other firms
shut down operations where
the unions had members em-
filoyed. Main issue involved
n the dispute is wages.
The two unions said they
would hold a news conference
after today's meeting.
