weeks ago, but Senate support
ers of the request feel they
have the votes to pass the
measure. Passage would mean
the House would be given an
other opportunity to approve
the bill.
The proposal would author
ize more funds for the Area
Redevelopment Agency for
programs to increase the in
come of economically depress
ed communities and regions.
Sen. Paul H. Douglas (D-
III.), one of the bill's defend
ers, said It presented sena
tors with a chance to support
a going program to provide
federal aid that would "bene
fit the people at home."
Sen. Wallace F. Bennett
(R-Utah) leading the attack
against the proposal, said
more funds would only pro
vide a slush fund for the
Democrats. Besides, he said,
the agency has been misman
aged and done little to reduce
unemployment.

Navy Reducing San Diego Flow
Washington - (UPB - The
Navy has sharply reduced the
flow of recruits to the San
Diego, Calif., Naval Training
Center in an effort to com
bat a mysterious outbreak of
meningitis cases.
Navy officials said the as
signment of recruits to San
Diego would be cut in half
and they would be sent to
other bases. The Navy al
ready has ordered about 4,
000 diverted to Great Lakes,
111.
There have been 25 cases
of meningities at San Diego
since January, and three re
sulted in the death of the vic
tims. However, no new cases
have been reported for more
than a month.
The steps being taken to
cut down on the flow of re
cruits to San Diego were de
scribed as precautionary and
designed to reduce chance
of any new cases of the di
sease breaking out.
One of the methods ol
fighting the disease is to re
duce the number of men in
each barracks by half. Navy
officials said the "summer
population" of the San Diego
base would be held to about
8,000 men. Normally, It II
15,000.

your U.S. Savings Bond wont loso its valuo...or ovon stop growing
What hasn't happened to U.S. Savings Bonds?
They've been stolen and thrown into a river.
Mistakenly left in an oven and baked at 400.
Hidden in a cookie jar and eaten full of holes by
hungry beetles. Forgotten in a pair of work
pants and washed, bleached and spin dried. Cut
into tiny pieces by an irate wife. Gnawed by
mice, and gobbled up by goats.
Yet, in spite of all these misfortunes, these
Bonds weren't lost to their owners. They didn't
even stop growing in value.
