Korean Village
Buried by Slide
Seoul -ilTO- Landslides fol
lowing heavy rains buried the
village of Changsunspo on
Koje Island today, killing at
least 71 persons, it was re
ported here.
Floods and landslides else-whf-e
in southern Korea had
caused 41 deaths this week.
Details of the Ch.pngsuns
po tragedy were scanty, b;
cause communications be
tween the island and the
mainland had been disrupted
by two days of torrential
rain.
First reports said 62 vil
lagers were entombed in a
great neap oi eann im ieei!S-,
high eariv this morning. Po-i?!-
lice rushed to the scene, and ''

Koje, about 30 miles south
west of the southern port of
Pusan, was the site of a p!
son camp during the Korean
war. Communist prisoners
confined there statjed a num
ber of bloody riots.
The danger in Changsung
po hed been foreseen, and
police moved residents out of
the village Monday night. The
night passed uneventfully,
and the villagers began re
turning home shortly before
the landslide struck.

one, for adver
tising himself, and the other
for extracting millions of dol
lars from humble folk.
It is frightening to see how
easy it was for this little-educated
man, with almost no
knowledge of medicine, but a
set of imposing-looking de
grees (bought from diploma
mills) to obtain a license to
practice medicine. Then, with
the help of a very powerful
radio transmitter (located
over the border in Mexico) his
voice came to be one of the
best-known in America. ,
Vt'hen I lived in Minnesota,
several times a day, if I were
to turn on my radio, I would
hear his voice as loud and
clear as if he were in the next
room. With this constant ad
vertising, he not only secured
a huge practice, but we read
that once he got enough votes
to be elected governor of a
great state.
Politicians have confessed
that all that kept him out of
the Governor's Mansion was
the fact that the vote-counters
threw out thousands of ballots
marked simply "Old Doc!"
Gerald Carson tells us how,
for years, this man broadcast

on his payroll so many able
lawyers, with high political
connections that it was very
difficult for any government
agency to get at him and stop
him from practicing medicine
purely as a racket. It is a dis
grace to our country that the
head of his legal staff was an
eminent man.
Essentially a Con Man
Carson tells us that strange
ly, it was a long time before
the U.S. Post Office authori
ties got around to objecting to
Brinkley's habit of using the
mails to defraud. They admit
ted that he had treated some
16,000 persons for a cash fee
of $750 each, or a total of
$12 million. As the Post Of
fice people said, Brinkley was
no physician or surgeon; like
most quacks he was essential
ly a con man.
When eventually a Federal
Grand Jury returned indict
ments against him charging
mail fraud on 15 counts, he es
caped punishment because he
was dying of a serious disease
of his arteries
An interesting point about
Brinkley is that for years he
charged hundreds of dollars
for the goat gland transplanta
tion operation which any sur.
geon-if he had cared to-could
have performed in a few min
utes, and for a few dollars.
What the patients did not
know is that always a goat
testicle, within a few weeks
after its transplantation, is so
thoroughly destroyed by the
man's body that it can be of
no value. If the patients had
thought for a minute they
could have seen that if the op
eration would work as well as
Brinkley guaranteed it would
do, all doctors would be per
forming It. ,
Later, after Brinkley had
had some patients die of lock
jaw which started in an in
fected goat gland, he changed,
and all he did was to cut the
man's spermatic cords. Every
day he kept drilling into the
minds of hundreds of thou
sands of aging men that their
loss of youth and potency was
due to prostatic disease, and
that the way to cure the pros
tatic disease was to come and
have the operation performed.
Actually, this operation had
only one effect, and that was
to make the man sterile (un
able to beget a child). It could
not rejuvenate anyone.
Told of Experiences
In the old days, when I
came to know some of Brink
ley's ex-patients, they told me
of their experiences with him.
One little man, aged 40, who
told me that he had never felt
strong enough to earn a dollar
or to marry, went to Brink
ley, hoping to be made over
into a big, strong, potent "he
man." The supposed doctor
asked immediately, "Have you
any well -to -do relatives?"
When told of a wealthy uncle.
Brinkley immediately got him
on the phone and said, "Your
nephew here has a very dan
gerous cancer, but if you will
telegraph me $750, Ml operate
tomorrow and save him." So
the money came, and the little
operation was done.
As the patient said to me,
"When I saw that it took only
20 minutes, I knew it wasn't
worth $750, and I law I was
being gypped. Later, when I
was no better, I went all the
way from down south to Kan
sas to get my money back.
There, two big tough guys
