Sugar Ray Suffers Bad
Beating; May Retire
Philadelphia - (I'm - Sugar
Ray Robinson planned to an
nounce today whether he
would retire because of last
night's lopsided beating by
Joey Giardello at Convention
Hall here.
Giardello of Philadelphia,
third ranking contender,
floored 43-year-old Ray in the
fourth round, had him reeling
in the sixth and holding on in
other sessions as Joey won a
unanimous decision.
A near-capacity crowd of
8,598, which paid an estimated
$59,097, roared encourage
ment to Robinson-the former
welterweight champion and
record five-time middleweight
ruler - in the seventh and
eighth rounds when Ray ral
lied magnificently. But he ran
out of gas again in the ninth
and 10th.
The defeat broke Ray's win
ning string at five bouts.
Giardello, 32, who expects
his victory to bring him a title
fight in October or November
said he felt sorry for New
Yorker Robinson.
He was a great champion.
Joey declared, "but it's a
shame his reflexes are gone
now."
Joey was favored at 7-5.
Giardello, weighing lBO'j
pounds to Robinson's 158'.2,
started after Ray with a com
bination hooking attack to
body and head in the first
round and kept after slender
Ray in every round to curtail
his punching room.
A left hook to the chin
floored Robinson for a count
of nine about midway in the
fourth round. And Ray appar
ently was saved by the bell
from going down again in the
sixth round.
Despite the battering, Rob
inson had only a slight nick
on his left brow at the finish.
The three ring officials fa
vored Giardello on a five-point-must
basis as follows:
Referee Buck Tiernan, 49-43:
judge Bob Polis, 47-43; and
judge Lou Press, 48-45.

Eugene Finds
Something To
Cheer About
United Press International
Eugene hasn't had many
chances to crow in the North
west League last year but it
did Monday night.
The last - place Emeralds
bopped league-leading Lewis
ton 10-1 and their ace pitcher,
Bruce Howard, came fairly
close to pitching a no-hitter,
Howard had a perfect game
going until the seventh when
Hoss Bowlin led off with a
double. The Broncs added two
more binelcs during the in
nine for their lone run. The
game was called at the end of
the seventh because of rain.
Eugene wrapped it up as
early as the third inning with
a seven-run rally. The big
blow of the frame was a
grand -slam homer by Jim
Lynn.
