White Sox Seem To Have
Found N.Y. Yankees' Number
By FRED DOWN
UPI Sportt Writer
The Chicago White Sox
have come up with a number
ior which American league
teams searched for years - the
Yankees" number.
It's an old Yankee tradition
to play their best against their
chief rivals to knock off
the contenders themselves.
The defending world cham
pions may eventually get
around to doing just that this
season but they'll have to
make up for lost time. Here
it is almost the half-way mark
of the season and they've yet
to score a victory over the
Vhite Sox!
, The White Sox made It
three in a row for the season
Monday night when Johnny
Buzhardt and Hoyt Wilhelm
combined in a six-hitter that
gave them a 5-2 victory over
the Yankees. The win was the
White Sox' . fourth In their
last five gomes and boosted
them to within one game of
first-place New York,

Buzhardt, a low fast ball
pitcher whom the White Sox
acquired from the Fhlladel'

beaten the Yankees four
straight times over the last
two seasons. He yielded five
hits in seven innings Monday
night to raise his overall sea
son record to B-3.

The classy left-hander Billy
Pierce, whose 16-6 record as a
starter gave the San Francisco
Giants a pennant in 1962,
seems ready to push the
Giants to the top as a re
liever this time around.
Pierce was belted as a start
er earlier this season and lost
his place in the pitching rota
tion, but the great veteran
turned in his fourth save in
relief Monday night in a 4-3
squeeze over the St. Louis
Cardinals.
The win put the Giants
back in first a half-game up
on the Cards in the mad, mad
National league scramble. Los
Angeles and Cincinnati, also
currently meeting head - on,
are 1 and Vt games out re
spectively. Rematch Tonight .
The Giants planned to send
out Bob Bolin (3-2) against the
Cards' erratice young Ray Sa
decki (4-4) in their rematch at
Busch stadium tonight.
San Francisco scored four
times in a wacky first inning
off Lew Burdette, just re
ceived by St. Louis in a trade
from Milwaukee, and then
hung on for victory.
Juan Marichal was belted
pretty hard now and then, but
bore down in the clutch and
then had impeccable help
from Pierce. The victory made
Marichal's record 12-3 and
when Dodger Sandy Koufax
(11-3) and Redleg Jim O'Toole
(13-3) finish their dog-eat-dog
battle at Cincinnati tonight,
Marichal should emerge about
the best record around.
In that weird first inning
here Monday, Willie Mays
gave a little demonstration of
why he is still worth consider
ably more than his sub-normal
(for him) .260 batting mark
would indicate.
Harvey Kuenn tripled and
was then thrown out at the
plate in a close one while
Chuck Hiller legged it to first.
Mays dribbled a single and he
and Hiller kept going when
Dick Groat threw the ball
away.
Willie McCovey was walked
and Orlando Cepeda was
plunked in the shoulder to
bring in the first Giant run
and keep the bases jammed.
Ed Bailey lofted a short fly to
George Altman.
Mays halted before break
ing for the plate. The stunned
Altman threw off target. Bur
dette, backing up the play,
took the ball and tried to get
McCovey at third but threw
it away as Willie scored and
Cepeda went to third. Jimmy
Davenport singled Orlando in.
