Jose Azgug Cog As Indians
Maintain Sizzling AL Pace
United Prast International
Somebody goofed on Joie
Azcue, who might have wound
up his career in the minora
had he not been given one
more chance by the Cleveland
Indians a month ago.
Azcue had previous trials
with the Cincinnati Reds and
Kansas City As, both of
whom had written him off as
weak hitter with only trlple-A
potential.
But the Indians acquired
him from Portland of the Pa
cific Coast league in a trade
with Kansas City a month
ago and have been congratu
lating themselves ever since.
Taking over as Cleveland's
No. 1 catcher when receiver
Johnny Romano broke ling
er in late May, tha 23-year-old
Azcue has fashioned a solid
303 batting mark that has
helped make the Indians the
hottest club in the majors for
the month of June.
Azcue helped the Indians to
their 18th victory In their last
21 games Thursday night
when he drove in four runs
with a pair of homers tn an
11-8 decision over me nam
more Orioles.
Gain Five Places
With Azcue behind the
plate in practically all their
games the last three weeks,
the Indians have spurted from
ninth place to fourth, only 3i
games off the pace.
Even with Azcue's two hom
ers Thursday night, however,
the Indians still needed an
other grand slam homer by
Max Alvis during a six -run
seventh inning to overcome
the Orioles. Woodie Held of
the Indians and losing pitcher
Dick Hall also hit homers dur
ing the contest.
Jerry Walker, who relieved
starter Dick Donovan in the
seventh inning, was credited
with his sixth victory against
one loss.
The Yankees rolled to their
seventh win in a row by
whipping Washington 5-4, the
Minnesota Twins beat the Chi
cago White Sox 9-4, and the
Boston Red Sox handed the
Detroit Tigers their 10th
straight defeat 8-3 In the only
other American league games
played.
Bobby Richardson's two
run double in the ninth in
ning off ex teammate Jim
Coatea enabled the Yankees
to overcome a 4-3 deficit
against the Senators, who lost
their eighth in a row.
Homers by Harmon Kllle
brew and Earl Battcy plus
Zoilo Versalles' triple with
the bases full were the key
blows in Minnesota's victory
over Chicago.
The Red Sox capitalized on
home runs by Dick Stuart and
Chuck Schilling to score five
runs in the fourth inning and
deal the Tigers their third
straight defeat under new
manager Chuck Dressen.

" LEA MOTORS I
The bureau of reclamation
has Just come out with its use
regulations for the Rogue Riv
er Recreation area. The rctf-
uations pertain to that portion
of the Rogue river canyon
from the Almcda Bridge to
Marial. Lands within approxi-
mately one-half mile on each
aide of the river throughout
a distance of 23 miles are In
eluded.
NO VEHICLES
The regulations are the usu
I variety except for the last,
which slates that "unless oth
erwlse authorised, motorist d.
wheeled vehicles, pack an!
mala and horses are strictly
prohibited except in cases of
emergency (such as transport
of injured persons from the
area, fire suppression, etc.),
Closely translated it means
that if you re going into that
area you go on foot on the
trail or by boat down the riv
er. OUCHI
Undoubtedly there will be
an agonized outcry from the
motorized set, and one can
expect them to raise quite a
bit of noise over the loss of
their so-called freedom to ride
The trail lg going to get
more and more use by fisher
men trying to get to the fish
first. The distance to Whiskey
creek is hot so far and the
fishing along it not so pour
that an argument for the use
of vehicles would carry much
weight.
THRILL FOR THRILL
Many of the motorbike rid
ers art interested In finding
ntw thrills for themselves
with thtir ntw toys. Most of
the ustrt of the Rogue River
Recreation area who are will
Ing to walk In are more inter
ested in the thrill of experi
encing i h e scenery, or the
fishing, or both. It would seem
that the former type thrill
can be had in some other way
than at the expense of the
latter type.
SNAGGERS AGAIN
Reports from the river indi
cate that the anaggers are at
it again. One can figure that
as the number of salmon in
the upper river becomes larg
er, and the fishing gets poor
er, that there are certain so
called fishermen who can't
stand the frustration and soon
revert to snagging as a means

The Carmen collected their

to edge the Loggers, first half
champs, 4 to 3 in the Major
league. Tru-Mix clipped Keith

Minor circuit. The victories
were the second in as many
nights for each.
Jay Allen rumbled for
three runs in the first inning
on hits by Tom Perdue,
Chuck Hoyt, Dave Love and
Jerry Shults and an error,
A base on balls, a passed ball
and a hit by Payne produced
the other tally in the second
canto.
One run came in for
Wheeler in the fifth inning
on an overthrow of third
base. Vern Collins got on
base on a miscue and Bob
Smith singled to set up the
score. A walk, a groundout,
Bob Reed's double and Pete
Hale's single resulted in two
runs in the sixth inning.
Two Hits Each
Perdue and Love had two
hits each for Jay Allen. Wil
lard Barnum gave up five
hits and walked three in six

ished on the slabb and fanned
one. Ven Collins, over three
frames, allowed Jay Allen iix
hits while whiffing six, walk'
ing two and hitting one. Mi'
lan Kurtz, going the last four
frames for Wheeler, allowed
two hits and two walks. He
struck out seven.
Tru-Mix garnered runs in
five of the seven innings.
Bob Custance, Virgil Felter

each. Gary Highland and Tom

REASONS FOR
The bureau haa some very
good reasons to back the stand
It haa taken In this regard,
and they relate directly to the
preblema caused.
Aside from the fact thai the
bureau has been requtsttd by
many cltisens to close the trail
to vehicles Is tht stronger evi
dence of the damage done to
the trail and to tht camping
areas by motorbikes and hors
es. Tht terrain it such that It
dottn't iakt a grtat dtal of
"hill climbing" with the blkts,
or foraging by the animals
let ruin the small camping
areas with ruts and piles of
manure. It is recognised that
there are a number of rela
tively mature adults with mo
torbikes who art primarily
interested In fishing or camp
ing, but ihtrt also are many
youngtr boys who own ve
hicles with which they starch
for ntw and inttresting things
to do. The fact that the van
dalism of camp trails Is grow
ing In proportion to the num
ber ef vehicles using these
trails sttms to bt an indict
tion of what "new and Inter'
ttting things" art being found,
FIRE HAZARD
The fact that these motors
use gasoline and are extreme'
ly hot is good reason to tear
the additional fire hazard pro
sentcd by smokers who ride
the vehicles. And aguin, if
those using the vehicles indi
cated that they were respon
sible persons, there would not
be any felt need for the reg
