Miss Cherye Meggers was crowned queen of the coming
Ashland Water carnival in ceremonies held Saturday night
at the Mark Antony hotel. Miss Meggers, who wore a short
formal gown of blue organdy embroidered in white, was
crowned by Cleatus Mitchell, president of the Ashland
Junior Chamber of Commerce. An outdoor enthusiast, the
queen skates and swims and is especially fond of water

of the Ashland Water Carni
val during Saturday night's
coronation banquet in the
Mark Antony hotel ballroom.
Queen Cherye will reign
over the water fete, which it
is thought will be an annual
event, at Emigrant lake Sun
day, June 23, and on Saturday
morning will ride in the pa
rade in downtown Ashland
with the two princesses cho
sen at the coronation ball.

retta Whipple, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Whipple,
Eagle Point, will, be the
queen"s attendants.
The three pretty contestants
were among nine finalists who
were guests of the Ashland
Chamber of Commerce Satur
day evening after having dem
onstrated their water skiing
skills the previous week in
try-outs at the lake. Following
the dinner each appeared in
swim suit and formal gown.
Is Crowned
To the queen went not only
her crown placed by Cleatus
Mitchell, president of the Wa
ter Carnival Queen contest
but also a Jantzen swim suit
and a U. S. savings bond. Each
of the three winners also will
be given a portrait by Whit
land Locke and the two prin
cesses will receive swim suits.
Judges were Mrs. Robert
O'Harra, Bill Purdy, Phil Hol-
man, Edward Carle and Mrs
Rena Locke. Music for danc
ing was furnished by a three
piece orchestra. Whitland
Locke was the mater of cere
monies.
The Saturday morning pa
rade will feature water sports
of all types. The line of march
is to form at the Plaza en
trance to Lithia park at 9:30
a.m. The Kilty band will play
and there are to be boats and
various types of outdoor floats.

ford Ski club is general chair
man of the June 23 show at
Emigrant lake. Program and
entertainment will begin at
1 p.m. and continue through
out the afternoon with con.
tests for all ages and in many
classifications.

which had first been worn
by her mother when she had
presented roses to Mrs. Marg
aret Fabrick of Medford when
Mrs. Fabrick was crowned
queen of Zuleima temple.
Daughters of the Nile. Mrs.
Selby and Meg are grand
daughter and great grand
daughter of the late Mrs. Fab
rick. The Nile ceremony had
taken place in April of 1943
when Margaret Selby (Mrs.
Philip) was also three years
old.

New Term
The first meeting of the
new term wa0 held Tuesday
evening in the Medford Ma
sonic temple with the honored
queen, Patricia Selby and her
officers presiding. Following
the meeting an addenda was
held honoring the retriing
junior past queen, Miss Jalin
da Langston.
Her officers each recited
verse, using the letters In her
name, and concluding by pre
senting her a blue carnation.
The addenda was planned by
Miss Pamela Nelson, senior
princess. The queen then pre
sented the past honored
queen's pin and a Jobina doll
to her and a traveling crown,
given to the bethel by Mrs.
Murray Gardiner, to be worn
by each succeeding junior past
honored queen on their visita
tions to other bethels.
Final plans were formulat
ed for the girls and adults at
tending Grand Guardian coun
cil and Grand Bethel to be
held in Portland on June 20,
21, and 22.
The two sons of Mr. and
Mrs. William E. Frake, 32
Richmond avenue, were in
Medford for the Fathers' day
week end. The older son, Wil
liam H. Frake, will remain
here until mid-July and will
return to Berkeley where he
is to enter his .senior year in
law school in the fall.
The younger son, Jim, who
will be a junior at the Uni
versity of Oregon journalism
school In the fall, has left for
Portland where he will work
with Associated Press for the
summer weeks.
Dates Changed
For Workshop
The square dance work
shops formerly held Thursday
evenings at the Upper Apple
gate Grange hall have been
changed to Wednesdays. The
time will be the same, from
8 to 10 p.m. June 19 practice
on both square and round
dance figures is planned. By

Saturday night, June 22,
Star Promcnaders will hold
a regular club dance at the
Roxy Ann Grange hall. Danc
ing will st. rt at 9 p.m. and
will continue until 12:30 a.m.
The change of time Is due to
the warm weather, the club

used to cool the hall for danc
ing comfort. Potluck refresh
ments will be served as usual.

ed. The club, which meets
twice monthly for 10 months
of the year and has social
meetings in July and August,
gives assistance to the Med
ford School of Hope, provides
scholarships for college wom
en, assists in sending high,
school girts to Girls State and
to a summer science institute)
and also takes part In a num
ber of national and interna
tional projects.

OSU Graduation
Prospect Mr. and Mrs.
George Hubbard attended the
graduation of their daughter,
Miss Mary Ann Hubbard,
June 2, at Oregon State uni
versity in Corvallis.
Miss Hubbard received her
bachelor of arts degree in bus
iness administration and tech
nology. Of the 1835 who grad
uated, 468 were women. There
were 35 states represented
and 26 countries.
Miss Hubbard will spend
her vacation in Los Angeles
with her aunt, Mrs. Betty
Sherman, who lives in Van
Nuys, and her grandfather,
Mr. R. F. Abbott, who lives
in Los Angeles.
Miss Janet Young of Med
ford will acompany her, with
the two planning to return
home July 1.
